Firmware Question

Hoping you guys can help me!!

I'm selling a PS3 for my brother. It was bought on eBay, the original owner used it twice, we bought and used it for one night. I know this sounds odd, but we lost one in a tornado, and were looking for a replacement. I came across two in the same day, and we kept the larger GB of the two.

It's a very early edition, 40GB, perfect condition and has all cords/BD/etc in original packaging.

I just got a Q on eBay about a 3.55 firmware or lower? Apparently if it's 3.55 firmware or lower it's worth more?

Can anyone verify this? Also, where do I go to find this out? Can I just plug into the HDMI, find it under settings, without connecting it to the Internet or the like?

I know these are sort of dumb questions, but I've only played with a PS3 once or twice, outside of popping a BD in a few times. I would just ask my brother, but I live 120 miles away and figured someone on here is probably more knowleddgeable than him anyway.
