While I grabbed this when it was announced as going OOP (also picked up the Tati Trafic DVD), great to hear this is back in print. Melville is one of my favorite French filmmakers and this is probably his greatest film. I highly recommend anyone who hasn't seen it to make this a blind buy or at least check it out on the Criterion Channel.
This probably means that Le Cercle Rouge and Pierrot le Fou won't be far behind since Kino Lorber already released Last Year at Marienbad, Lionsgate probably won't give up The Third Man, Ran, or Contempt; and we know Chunking Express is coming. Though, they're completely different masters (2005 HD from 35mm dupe negative vs 2013 4K from 65mm camera negative). This would indeed be the first time an OOP Blu is brought back as-is. |

Out of curiosity, do you know/remember roughly when this initially went out of print? Truth be told, my deeper interest in films only began roughly two or three years ago, and I was not familiar with anything of this sort prior to then. By the time I even heard of Melville, this was certainly out of print. I very nearly went for the Melville box set from Studiocanal, but with this reissue, I believe all but perhaps one of the films available there are now available domestically.

https://www.criterion.com/current/po...t-announcement The first round of StudioCanal casualties was in Feb 2010 when 16 DVD-only titles, one Blu-ray (Pierrot le Fou), and two box sets (Saura Eclipse and Orphic Trilogy) were put on reduced price before going OOP. Also worth saying that Kino Lorber's editions of Bob le flambeur, Le Doulos, and Leon Morin, Priest are outstanding. All are maxed-out encodes of StudioCanal's 4K restorations with some decent extras competing with Criterion's editions. The first two were never upgraded |

I have the Kino editions of the aforementioned Melvilles that you mentioned but I haven't gotten the opportunity to watch them yet, so I'm very glad to know they are of such quality. He's certainly a director who deserves it. Kino also did a very nice job with Last Year at Marienbad, speaking of another Criterion title that went OOP at the same time as the others named. |

We are in the middle of the film's 70th anniversary...
Frankly, I prefer a new edition with the 4K restoration and additional extras but knowing Criterion, they only believe in one remastered reissue and one remastered reissue only. Fortunately, Lionsgate still embraces catalog titles, so if we ever want a 4K Ultra, we go to them. |
