Default Explan why people like Breaking Bad

I've never seen an episode before, and it's on AMC right now as a marathon. I've watched two episodes so far and just don't get it. Why do people like this show? Walter was angry he had to move barrels by himself, and his partner doesn't work there. And the other episode made even less sense. I'm now watching a third episode and it starts wth high jacking a truck (it seems) and they are putting hoses on a truck. The truck driver was shot.

(Me, I'd never seen the show either, got it confused with "Weeds" on Showtime, and thought there was an epidemic of Home Underground Legalization Dramedies on original-cable, since they wanted to rub their naughty "current topics" in the networks' face.
Now, if we could only trace the hypnotic signal that causes people to think Family Guy is the funniest show and the only thing they should watch on the air...)

I've seen the first two seasons. Here are the reasons why I enjoyed the ever-loving hell out of it:
  • I love the look and style of it. I love the camerawork, especially in the pilot episode which made everything looks really stylish and more cinema-like.
  • Regardless of whether Walt is considered a good guy or a bad guy, I could connect to him. The show lays out all the right details to help us understand his motivations (and motivation is the biggest and most important factor in character-building). I find myself sympathizing with Walt and I kinda want to see him succeed.
  • Thanks to the established characters, the film builds a compelling plot that continuously twists and turns. Just when things look like they could be getting better, something happens to make things worse, so the struggle is constant and the conflicts remain gripping throughout. Best of all, the film really twists around the morality of everything (Walt is a bad man doing bad things for a good cause, at least in these first two seasons), and I find that way more fascinating than the typical black-and-white viewpoint.
Based on what you've posted, it doesn't sound like you really connected to the characters, and thus never really connected to the story and its nuances. I take it that the production overall didn't wow you either. It's been the opposite for me, but I do need to catch up on the last few seasons to see how it all turns out. As it is though, I thought the show's first two seasons were addictive, highly-nuanced, and compelling.

EDIT:
Are you watching these in order? It will probably work best watching them all beginning to end, rather than jumping into the middle of everything.

I never saw Weeds; that's a comedy, right? It looks like it condones drug use.

As I recall, I never once got the impression that Breaking Bad condoned drug use at all; the characters resorted to its production as a means to an end. There is absolutely nothing funny about the show (except maybe in a "so sad but true" kind of way, like the movie Fargo or something), and it seems to me that everybody involved with this business gets jacked up pretty badly. The whole time, I started to think that Walt should have just stayed out of it all, even if it meant death by cancer. The path to a cure seemed worse.

But in the end, those are all more reasons why I found it enticing.

EDIT:
Well, now that I think about it, Walt's problems would never be problems if it wasn't for the law, and I don't remember the show actually showing the people who use meth. So I guess it does insinuate a pro-drug message, because Walt's case is so sympathetic and it suggests that it would all be better if it was all legal.

Ah crap, this show sucks. Thanks for making me think, Eric. It's all ruined for me now.

I have no idea, it's on AMC right now. I don't know if they are playing them in order. I just fond out it was on whilst channel surfing. They're calling it the "Breaking Bad Binge"

By the way, where's the guy from the Godzilla movie? Heisenberg. The way people were making a big deal about him being in Godzilla, I thought he was the top guy, but every episode I've watched so far is all about Walt, so I guess Walt is the top guy?

I actually have to start watching it soon myself. I have season 1 on Vudu so I'm gonna pop on the pilot one day and just see where it takes me.

You really should stop watching, and start from the beginning.

Yeah, they're probably showing random episodes from random seasons. The show is a continuous series of events, so it should be seen beginning to end (just like Lost or any of those HBO shows). No wonder it makes no sense.

Yep, Walt (Bryan Cranston) is the main character throughout. He appears in Godzilla as Joe Brody, the guy who witnessed the meltdown in the beginning, then broke into the quarantine zone years later. It was a small role, really.

If you meant somebody else, I have no idea; Cranston's the only one I'm familiar with, and I don't see Heisenberg anywhere.

Haven't watched that show either, and the plot revolves around the messy world of marijuana distribution being more complicated, paranoid and double-crossing than it looks, but the mom is definitely NOT intended to be a "tragic" character like Walter, for their intended audiences.
(The weed-pack audience is supposed to think "One of us, one of us! ", while the female empowerment-fantasy audience is supposed to admire this plucky Not Your Average House-Mom character sticking it to the system...)

Oh well, at least we're far away from the 80's when "Original cable series" meant "Canadian boob shots on HBO".

I'm just going by what someone was shouting in the movie theater "oh there goes Heisenberg." But he might have mixed up the characters. Ok so it's Walt in Godzilla? He looks different in the movie, so I got confused.

Sounds like I need to watch more BrBa to get the Heisenberg reference. It's either a name I heard in the show and forgot, or only appears in later seasons. But yeah, Walt is in Godzilla, with hair and all.

I also just rewatched 2012's Total Recall, and found Cranston stared in that one as Cohaggen. It was a role I totally forgot about. He's been getting around a lot these days, and I believe the show may have something to do with it.

To me though, Cranston will always be Hal from Malcolm in the Middle.

You need to watch a lot more than two episodes, my friend. I was the same when I started out. Liked it, but didn't think much beyond that during the 1st season. By the midway point of the 2nd season you'll start to get. By the 3rd season you won't be able to stop watching and by the 4th season it'll be one of the more exciting television series you have ever seen in recent years. That said, I am not sure on it's replay value since the show is an exercise in tension. It would be interesting to see if it holds up knowing the surprises elements.

The fact that you thought it was necessary to start this thread is mind boggling...... And i thought your "bunny in my yard" thread was bad but you just topped that doozy.

I'm not 100% positive, but I believe you were watching episodes from season four. This is not a serialized television show. If you want to follow along you have to start at the beginning. The first few episodes will give you a good impression of the show and whether or not you will enjoy the series.

I'm not going to call it the "Best Show EVER!," but it is excellent.
