Default Orson Welles' Othello coming to US blu-ray!

In a recent interview with Ray Kelly on wellesnet.com, Orson Welles' daughter Beatrice informed us that, in addition to the forthcoming European Carlotta blu-ray, Othello will also be released in the US on blu-ray. Here's the relevant info from the interview:

RK: Carlotta Films is planning a theatrical release of your 1992 restoration of Othello, as well as a home video release for Europe. Will there be an American DVD and Blu-ray release in the near future?

BW: Yes. Julian Schlossberg will be doing the home video release. There is no better person. He should be seen as knight in shining armor for Orson Welles films.

Great news, but...

...maybe Julian (or some-damn-body) could get off their ass and give us Falstaff already! This is one of the greatest films of all time and it still doesn't have a N.A. DVD release.

Yeah, I want Chimes at Midnight. Thought I've heard the film elements of that are in rough shape and no one wants to pony up the dough required for it's extensive restoration.

I saw a print (collector's copy) a few years ago and it had water damage on the sides in the last reel.

It's sad the owners of the film won't restore it.

The issues surrounding Chimes at Midnight are addressed in the interview:

RK: Can we hope to see Chimes at Midnight get a proper home video release?

BW: That's the dream of my life, to that for him. The owners refuse to sell it. Chimes at Midnight is out there on the black market and they won't lift a finger to stop that. And Julian says, "I am sorry, but there is no way I am going to spend money and try to restore this film when it is plastered all over the place illegally." The owners will not spend a penny... It's just sickening. Unless they decide to do something, nobody is going to touch it... There are a lot of people interested in restoring Chimes, not just Julian, but it has got to be free and clear... It's crazy. They don't want to sell it. They want to keep it because of the prestige, but they will not do a thing to stop the black market (videos).

I'm curious to know the identities of the owners.

That is maddening. Even this long after Welles' death and wide acceptance of his brilliance, his films are still treated like shit.

Glad to read that Othello is getting a US release. The more Welles out on Blu-ray, the better.

I was hoping for a Criterion release, the commentary that Myron Meisel and Peter Bogdonavich did for the LD was great
