Default my $.02

You know I have had a long road trip for work today and something just irked me. I was thinking how these reports are coming out and stating that most PS3 owners do not know that their machines are BD players. HOW!!!! It seems hard to me that a person would drop $600++ a year ago and know nothing about the machine. I knew what is was able to do before I bought it. It was one of the selling points.

Just my $.02

By the way. My target had Uncharted in their PS3 case for sale in the Harry Potter slot. SO, I got next weeks game for $29.99

well I find that hard to believe because the Blu logo is on the front and back case AND on the BD. If it was only on the back....maybe, but theres no way no one noticed

the problem is that most people don't know what Blu-ray is to begin with. So when they see the logo on the box it means nothing to them.

I was at Fry's doing my civic duty (to hang out at the HD section and talk everyone there into getting blu), when I actually met a guy who had a PS3 and didn't know until now that it can play Blu-ray. I guess he saw the PS3 commercial with Spiderman 3 because he was carrying Spiderman 3 BD and the PS3 BD remote and was asking the Fry's people for the Transfomers on Blu. The Fry's folk were actually very helpful... they told him TF is going to come out on Blu next year, when Paramount's exclusive DUD crap is over. That made me chuckle...

Anyway, it's not that he was ignorant about PS3, he didn't know anything about HD at all. He didn't know the difference between DUD and Blu, nor did he know that you need different players to play them and that not all movies are available for each format. I had to explain to him that he needed a DUD player to watch TF DUD. Here's the funny part, his wife was with him and when he mentioned getting an XBOX with a DUD add-on, his wife went like, "don't get another gaming machine" or something like that... funny because DUD guys rag on PS3 being a gaming machine when the common folk see the 360 as a gaming machine also... even more so without the add-on.

Long story short, I showed them how to get the most out of their PS3, telling them to get an HDMI cable, showing them where the HDMI input is on their TV, etc. Good news is, even after I told them about the $99 DUD player at Walmart, they decided to just get the DVD of TF and not even get into DUD.

It's great that the PS3 commercial now shows the Blu-ray player of it... I can only imagine how much the Blu numbers will rise because of it.

I think a lot people who bought a PS3 (and even more now that the price is lower) bought it simply because they owned a PS2 and know that 3 is greater than 2. The only research that was done was walking into the store to find the price.

It still baffles me though, as I picture most gamers having access to the internet, and most reading up on a PS3 before it came out in anticipation. I'm sure in every preview of the PS3 ever written it included a part about the blu ray player.

A thought I had the other day is why doesnt sony put a tutorial-educational video on the hard drive of the ps3. So when you plug it in for the first time and go to videos its a cheesy video showing all the features like online, card readers, and i a nice blu ray demo! Maybe have the split screen demo showing the better pq than dvd. It could always be deleted by the user when they no longer need it. I think it would be like having a salesman on the inside of every ps3, and some people would appreciate not having to read Just an idea.

And anyone that has a D* DVR knows all about this. So most would think nothing of it.

But back to the op just think about it if all those that have a PS3 were buying movies this fight would be over. So no I can believe it.

Sony should really be frank and to-the-point about this. They should mention "playable on the PS3" in every Blu-ray release commercial. I don't understand why it's so hard for them to push their own format. Just come out and say it, spell it out for the public FFS!!!!

Sony is sitting on a gold mine of potential BD sales and it seems like they don't care. These people haven't figured it out yet so it's time to start pounding it into their heads.

Most people DO NOT even have ther HDTV hooked up right. They are thinking they are watching HD even if its hooked up via composite. When it comes to stuff like this ALOT of people are uneducated about it.

Problem starts with the stores where people buy them from.

There are things Sony can do to let the buyers know this that would cost them next to nothing. For example, but a clear sheet of removable plastic over the top (like the ones that come on cell phone displays, or many plastic displays on CE products). That in big letters says "Plays High Definition Blu-Ray Movies". You could peel it off easily if you don't like it, or you could leave it on to protect the cover, which scratches fairly easily, at least mine did. If the person looking at that can't figure it out it plays BD's, then they are a lost cause until BD becomes far more mainstream anyway.

luckily i can educate people at my job that the Ps3 is also used as a Blu-Ray player plus i tell them that all PS3 games are also Blu-Ray discs so which means if someone traded in a PS3 game that was damaged that would be extremely rare

It's like this guys. There are PS3 owners who buy and watch bd's and there are PS3 owners that use it mainly for games. I for one have about 12 bd's and 3 games. My friend however, who bought the 60gb when it came out a year ago, has only one bd and about 8 games. He's a huge bd supporter, just not a huge movie buyer. It's hard to convince people to spend over $20 on a bd when they never spent any $ on dvd's.

SO all-in-all if they spent money on dvd's and they own a ps3, they are buying bd's. Someone should do a survey on that!

Like a lot here, I get PlayStation Underground email. These emails generally focus on the PSN Store. Sometimes an email will only announce the imminent release of an exclusive game.

The point is that I have never seen a PlayStation Underground email on Blu-ray movie capability or to announce the imminent release of a blockbuster movie on BD. This is an untapped marketing strategy.

We better hope the majority of PS3 players either A) don't have an HDTV yet or B) don't realize they can play blu-ray movies. If A and B are not true, then having 5+ (or 6+ depending on whose stats you use) million PS3 boxes out there (worldwide) does blu-ray little good. But if A and B are true, then with the correct marketing strategy, blu-ray movie buying will rise dramatically.

If North American PS3 owners (around 2 million) knew what they had, the blu-ray sales should be around 4:1 instead of this week's 1.85:1. The majority of PS3 owners are not buying movies regularly. WHY they're not is the question. If they simply don't know, then a marketing barrage will help tremendously. If they just don't want to buy blu-ray movies, then blu-ray sales ain't going to go up.

I'm gonna say this. When it's all said and done. Those ps3 users that buy movies will buy bd's. Those that don't, won't. Hopefully those that do is like 70%. That's more than enough for me.
