Default Cabin Boy (1994)

From Kino.

Coming September 18th on DVD and Blu-ray!

Cabin Boy (Special Edition)
with optional English subtitles
A cult classic for fancy lads everywhere, Cabin Boy was met with a frothy blend of confusion and hostility upon first release, but has aged like a fine flagon of wine. From Chris Elliott and Adam Resnick, co-creators of the influential deconstructed sitcom Get a Life, Cabin Boy is one of the most surreal comedies ever released by a major Hollywood studio. After graduating from finishing school as a well-bred “Fancy Lad,” Nathanial Mayweather (Chris Elliott, There’s Something About Mary) prepares for a trip to Hawaii. But his plans are dashed when he mistakenly boards The Filthy WhÒre, a fishing boat manned by a ragtag crew of salty shipmates, and soon becomes the vessel’s hapless Cabin Boy. On his journey, he woos the feisty but beautiful Trina (Melora Walters, Magnolia) and encounters a host of eye-rubbing curiosities including an amiable shark man, a savage ice monster, a tobacco-chewing cupcake, and a six-armed seductress (Ann Magnuson, Love at Large) who relieves Nathanial of his virginity, much to the displeasure of her 30-foot salesman husband (Mike Starr, Dumb and Dumber). Inspired by classic seafaring yarns like Captains Courageous, Cabin Boy has grown in reputation over the years as a truly offbeat cult comedy-fantasy with Ray Harryhausen-like special effects, a hilariously oddball performance by Elliott, and a treasure chest of eccentric supporting players including Brian Doyle-Murray, Brion James, James Gammon, Andy Richter and Russ Tamblyn, plus a seminal cameo by Elliott and Resnick’s old boss David Letterman as an antagonistic sock-monkey vendor.

Special Features:
• New Audio Commentary by star Chris Elliott and director Adam Resnick
• New Interview with star Chris Elliott and director Adam Resnick
• Limited Edition booklet essay by film critic Nick Pinkerton (Blu-ray only)
• Archival cast & crew interviews featuring Chris Elliott, Ritch Brinkley, James Gammon, Brian Doyle-Murray, Brion James, Melora Walters, Russ Tamblyn, production designer Steven Legler and writer/director Adam Resnick
• B-Roll Footage
• Edited outtakes
• Newly commissioned art by Jacob Phillips
• 5 TV spots
• Limited Edition O-Card (Blu-ray only)
• Reversible Art
• Theatrical Trailer

Yes!
e: If only someone could have gotten David Letterman to comment, his feelings on the film are hilarious

A very stupid but really funny movie. It was interesting seeing Russ Tamblyn as "Chocky the Shark".

Love the retro-style cover art on the left.

Ha, this is awesome -- was in high school when this came out, and my junior-year physics teacher at that time was an insane fan of this movie (she'd randomly quote it at odd times during class, including several of Letterman's "monkey"-lines).

I saw this with a girlfriend theatrically, mostly because I liked Chris Elliot on “Get A Life”. At that time, I hated it. I trolled friends asking me if it was any good, telling them how funny it was and how they need to see it. They hated it too.

Now, all of these years later, I think I might like it if I watched it again. I’ll pick it up during one of Kino’s sales.

Another cool missed extra is this episode of Movie Magic that used to air on Discovery Channel all the time, with lots of details of how they did the special effects for the film:

No way I'd buy this, but I love how Kino is selling it with the cover on the left. LOL @ the tagline.

Wow I haven't seen it in years.

I used to watch Movie Magic all of the time back then. My favorite of it will always be the one that has Stargate in it.

This made my day. Day 1.

I have fond memories of this movie. It was so otherworldly. Plus, nostalgia. This was one my brothers and I would always watch together. We had it on VHS.
