Default Unreleased UK Blu-ray Wish List

Thought it might be interesting to see what everyone has at the top of their wish lists for films that haven't had an official (or decent) Blu-ray release in the UK. Inspired by my envy of US releases (Criterion, I'm looking at you). Yes, I know we can all buy region-free players and have at it, but putting that aside for a moment, what films are you really desperate to see get a UK release?

My picks...

Until the End of the World (287-minute cut)
I saw this film on TV in the late 90s and loved it. It was the 179-minute cut and was probably the longest film I'd ever watched at that point. A few years later I heard there was a longer cut and have been dying to see it ever since. Unfortunately the only option other than the recent US release seems to be a German disc which doesn't feature English subs for the non-English parts. Hopefully Criterion will release this in the UK at some point.

The War of the Worlds (1953)
One of my absolute favourite 50s sci-fi films, and I've been hoping for a Blu release for years. Again, Criterion have released a decent version in the US, so fingers crossed it makes it across the pond at some point.

In the Mouth of Madness
IMO a massively underrated Carpenter film I'd love to see get a decent UK release. Aside from the US Scream Factory release there are a couple of European versions (Spanish & German?) but I think this one deserves a proper UK outing.

Ju-On
After the success of their Ring set, I think these films would be prime Arrow territory. I'd love to see The Curse 1&2 and The Grudge 1&2 in a nice little limited edition boxset. Even better if they could include forerunners Katasumi and 4444444444 as extras.

Uzumaki
Another Japanese horror that I think is long overdue for a UK release. I know this one wasn't as critically acclaimed as other notable J-horror films, but it's got a great style and feel to it and thoroughly deserves a release.

The Day After
Came out a year before Threads and deals with the same subject matter from a US perspective. There's a 2-disc US edition available, so I'm hoping we get a UK release at some point.

Terror Firmer
Possibly the craziest film I've ever watched. About as low budget as it gets, and a story that's messed up even by Troma's usual standards (or lack of). Would likely still look like shit in full HD, but if Tromeo & Juliet can get a UK release than this one should too.

Just some classic TV boxsets for me, really. Would love the classic 70s Columbo, and the entire Seinfeld. Films-wise, my wishlist is entirely 4K - eg. The Good, The Bad & The Ugly.

Some great picks there. Can't believe I forgot about True Lies, which being a Cameron film also leads me to wonder when the hell we'll get The Abyss too. I'm sure I read that Cameron was supervising a transfer in 2018, but not heard anything since.

I'd also happily pay whatever they asked for The Outer Limits. Especially the 90s series.

That would be wonderful. I have the DVD set, but I'd buy a Blu-ray set in a second.

There's an Australian set of the original run, but it's pretty pricey... I'll patiently wait for a UK release as I've yet to finish the Twilight Zone set, which set the bar for what an OL set could look like. Here's hoping!

Fine selections mentioned. It's a sure sign how spoiled the film collector is these days, that with every passing year my wish list gets smaller and smaller. Still, I'd love to see the BFI do a Blu-Ray edition of their Early Films of Peter Greenaway DVD set, encompassing his debut film and 3-hour masterpiece, The Falls. I'd like to see a UK Blu of Nightwatching as well, it's mystifying that Axiom issued this great film in the UK on DVD only. Scandinavian editions are now hard to find so a UK issue feels long overdue...

I'm tempted to add Warhol's The Chelsea Girls and Bob Dylan's Renaldo and Clara but it seems unlikely either will get a release any time soon...

Oof, yes £130 is a bit steep. Thanks for reminding me that I still need to pick up that Twilight Zone set though.

These two would be an automatic "shut up and take my money", along with Star Trek: DS9.

From Criterion:

The Great Escape - redo (1963)
Blow-Up (1966)
Barry Lyndon - redo (1975)
All That Jazz (1979)

I actually have Great Escape & Blow-Up, I can play them using the Panasonic trick, but I'd double dip for a region B release.

Kino:

The four Universal/Paramount Hope/Crosby Road To films (Singapore/Zanzibar/Morocco/Utopia). It's funny that they haven't been released anywhere in Europe yet.

The Ghost Breakers (1940)
Konga (1961)

I'm sure there's a few more, but that's all I can think of right now.

Generally these threads get moved to the US section, I don't think we've got room for another "sticky", but it would be nice to have a section for UK and European movies not yet released on Blu-ray.

I don't ask for much...
Those John Woo ones will NEVER happen unless someone buy the company that made them as they've moved into a different business & have NO interest in releasing them.

I think the Scorsese doc on the Rolling Thunder Revue has put to bed any chance we ever had of seeing the full four-hour Renaldo & Clara released officially. Bob does like playing his little games.
