Default I'm about to watch Inland Empire for the first time and have two questions

  1. Should I watch this sober or high?
  2. Should I watch this alone or with a friend who both loves Lynch and hasn't seen this film?

Watch it alone and fully sober (and in the dark, late at night, naturally). Try to save the "alternative viewing experiences" for after your first viewing. That way you'll have some notion of what's going when your mental faculties aren't firing on all cylinders.

That's what I thought. It's just that when I'm high I am normally more focused.

It's perhaps best to watch alone, but I first watched the film with my fiancée (who's also fond of Lynch's work) and there's one scene in particular that scared the shit out of her.

Is it worse than Dune? I've never heard anyone say it was worse than Dune.

Considering that we have similar views on Batman Returns and Unknown Pleasures, you're most likely right.

Just take a hammer and start slamming into your man parts. Pretty much the same experience as watching this. A lot shorter also.

I am a huge Lynch fan and I have never seen the film in one full sitting. I usually break it up into three parts.

Hey! Leave Dune alone! Some of us Lynch fans love Dune - for me, its a flawed gem.

Inland Empire is nothing like Dune. Not even slightly. You cant even being to compare them. I like Inland Empire but its not near my favourites of Lynch. Id certainly much rather watch Dune than Inland Empire and have done many more times. Inland Empire is a tough watch - that 3 hours is worth it though.

Hey! There are websites for that.

As to "Inland Empire" I think it's one of those movies that is just bound to be very divisive.

Whether or not it ends up being your thing, there's one scene alone that makes Inland Empire worth watching.

Come on, baby, do the Loco-Motion!

A David Lynch-loving friend gave me his copy of INLAND EMPIRE because he hated it! When I watched it, on the other hand, all three hours straight, I had to go through all three-and-a-half hours of deleted scenes and bonus features as soon as possible!

Not Lynch's best film by any means, and it's kind of a shame he decided to shoot it all in standard-definition mini-DV (he explains his reasoning in a bonus feature), but it's definitely Lynchian in every respect! Enjoy (but never, ever watch it on a cellphone)!
