Default Antlers (2021) - January 4th 2022

Quote:
synopsis:

the myth of the dreaded "wendigo" comes to shocking life in this terrifying horror thriller. When a small-town oregon teacher (keri russell) and her brother (jesse plemons), the local sheriff, seek to help a troubled young boy who possesses a strange secret, the consequences are more dreadful than they could have possibly imagined.

bonus features:

The evil within – co-writer/director scott cooper gives us a glimpse of the many complex layers at play in his approach to making antlers, a horror film about very human concerns, and his most ambitious film to date.

An exploration of modern horror with guillermo del toro – producer guillermo del toro traces the lineage of elevated horror in cinema. Employing his encyclopedic knowledge and passion for the horror genre, he discusses the connection between mythology and human behavior.

Artifacts and totems – the filmmakers discuss how they created this world of a small, tight-knit northwest community of working-class americans in bringing scott cooper's vision to life.

Gods walk among us – an in-depth exploration of the digital and practical effects used to create the film's primal creatures.

Cry of the wendigo – discover the fascinating folklore behind the wendigo from the film's first nations consultants. Learn about the creature's mythic origins and about its connection to man's betrayal of the land.

Metamorphosis – at the center of antlers is a transformative performance by scott haze. Hear about the actor's preparation for filming, including how he lost some 70 pounds in order to play a deeply tragic character.

Comic-con @ home with scott cooper and guillermo del toro – steve weintraub moderates this candid comic-con@home 2020 panel interview with guillermo del toro and scott cooper. Hear the filmmakers describe their process, and learn who some of their filmmaking heroes are.

This film suffered from an overly long delay with its release, due to the sale of Fox to Disney. At least it didn't go through the even longer delay that the 2009 film "Trick 'r Treat" was subject to by Warner. The trailers for "Antlers" are some of the best I have seen in years in terms of peaking my interest!

Willing to bet the extensive extras were produced prior to 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment being laid off.

In October 2020 I went to my local small town theater to watch a Halloween showing of an American Werewolf in London. After the movie I checked out the free poster section to see what was in the bin and found a one sheet for this film which I brought home just because. About a month or two ago I started seeing trailers for the first time for the film on tv and was glad to see it was finally getting released.... jump to today where I learned it's going straight to Video and I was a bit confused as I thought for sure it was going to play in theaters. I'm still a bit surprised honestly as it seems like it could have been a good late January/early February horror release as horror typically does well in those months and to the best of my knowledge there isn't anything of significance planned for January/February 2022.

Huh? It went wide theatrical on October 29th.

This is just the disc announcement after the theatrical run.

Yes. It had a theatrical run and it looked and sounded great. Wish there was a 4k release.

I doubt the UK will get it like the Night House (top ten of the year imo). Guess I’ll have to wait for it to go on Disney+

Having watched it twice, here are some questions;

[Show spoiler]What happened to the original Wendigo that infected the father and son? They found human remains in the woods, before the father and son were released, was that the original creature’s work?

Didn’t the dad bite the principal in the face? When they found her corpse, her face was completely untouched.

Very good movie with excellent acting, music and cinematography. But the short story it was based on, was way more disturbing and bleak.

Not much chatter or buzz surrounding this release. It's been a brutally long wait since the pretty solid-looking trailer first dropped almost 2 years ago. It was high on my list of films to watch, but I never caught it in theaters around where I live. Price for the blu is still lingering up around $30, hopefully it will drop shortly. No 4k release, of course...

^ Best Buy, Target, WalMart etc should all have it $19.99 in store. Amazon isn't great with Fox/Disney discs.

I thought it was very good. Depressing but good. I never read the story it was based on so can't say how much they changed it. One thing that bugged me was in the initial trailer a few years back the scene where
[Show spoiler]we see the hooved feet walking up the stairs
never made it into the movie. That scene alone really drew me into wanting to see this film.
