That's it.

I think it's pretty anticlimatic myself simply because I had thought they'd been on board this whole time anyways.

Hell, I've been hearing about Java support with BD for months.

*shrugs*

BOOOOOO.

I figured they were already a member, since java-bd was being used.

I agree it's underwhelming, and the news doesn't mean much for the consumer. However on the industry side there's a lot of weight to it. When you look at the influence of all voting board members of bluray, they dwarf the board of hddvd, and they now have all the interrelated industries (studios, consumer electronics, computer, semiconductors, software) versus only the patent holders.

All true but again: Isn't this complete non news? We've all been reading about Java support for BD for MONTHS now.

This is much ado about absolutely nothing from where I sit.

This is like a "sky is blue" memo or something...

I agree. If this was the "key partner" announcement...this is pretty lame. Ditto on thinking Sun was already on the board. Ah well, at least we have movies utilizing the MPEG4 codec!

Maybe a rhetorical figure (pleonasm) like "black crow" or "white milk"...

Stop being a "codec nazi!"

Like you and I just said in another thread:

Deep thoughts. Many layers of meaning...

We've all known that Sun was tied to BR with Java, but this is news in the sense that that they are now official members of the board.

Nah I doubt this is the "key partner". Having Sun onboard officially is important but the key partner has to be a strategic ally. Someone totally new...*cough* Universal *cough*

If that were to happen, then that would mean BDA has 100 percent studio support on paper and I would have to think that would essentially end the format war, or any pretense of one, right on the spot.

I almost wish that would have been the announcement today just so we can all finish it and move forward.

As far I'm concerned, any usefulness we could have gotten of this "format war" is just about finished.

Barring something totally out of the blue and unforseen, I think HD-DVD has done us all as much good as it can do: It lit a fire under the BDA's ass, to a point, embarassed them a little bit after they stumbled out of the gate in such grandiose fashion, but I'm sure most reasonable knew that any BD blunders and shortcomings would be shortlived.

I think we're seeing some refinements and processes happening earlier and faster than they otherwise might have been had their not been HD-DVD nipping at their heels this whole time and doing better than ANYONE could have thought or expected.

But I don't think any of us really expects HD-DVD to go much further than where it's at right now...do we?

I don't. And I like the format. I love the PQ. I love the audio.

You and I, for starters, never made any secret that we bought into HD-DVD mostly out of impluse and we're fairly happy with it, but outside of that:

IF all this stuff comes together in time for the holidays, I don't know about you, but it's not inconceivable to me at al that I could sell my Toshiba player for whatever and use those funds towards a nice BD player.

Lots of IFs, though. I may yet keep it.

If I even SENSE that Universal fudges, for me that's when the player goes up on the aftermarket for sale.

100 (major)percent studio support ices it, regardless of anything else.
