Default BDs You Wish Included the Original Cut ?

Lots of blu-rays have an extended or "directors" cuts included; but on some you're forced to watch the "extended" version because they don't include the original theatrical cut.

Now, I'm not really talking about "Star Wars" here or other films where they've been "updated" with effects, etc.

I'm talking about films like "Superbad" where you're forced to watch the bloated version, since it's the only cut of the film on the BD. With "Superbad" I could tell where the bloat was, but since I never saw the leaner version, it just seemed like the film was too long.

Another example is "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly." One of my Top 10 movies EVER and I LOVE the restored version. But, it'd be nice to also have the shorter original American cut included.

Yours?

The Warriors, and Dances with Wolves. The theatrical version of Dances with Wolves is available in the UK on blu-ray, but not in the U.S.

I would love to see the original U.S. cut of The Shining only to see what was left out. I'm more than perfectly fine with the cut we have on Blu-ray though (since it's the original theatrical cut intended).

The studio made Stanley cut scenes from it to make it go by faster. Actually, I think the U.K. was the place that got the shorter cut (and it's available on Blu-ray in the U.K. as well).

Originally Kubrick cut two minutes (a scene at the end of the picture in a hospital) out of his 146 minute cut resulting in the US cut. For Europe he cut about 25 minutes out to target it more to a European audience. I don't think the studio had anything to do with it.

The US BD is the 144 minute version and the UK one is the 119 minute European cut.

Rob Zombie's Halloween II. The director's cut is good, but I would love to have the option of seeing the theatrical version too.

I do wish my copy of Dances with Wolves had the theatrical cut, thats the one i watched for years on vhs and got me to love the movie so much. I love the new extended cut though, even at close to 4 hours, but they should of included the theatrical.

Yes, Kubrick had final cut for years and the studio gave him all the time he wanted to shoot and edit. I saw this when it opened wide and the hospital scene was not there. He cut it very shortly after the limited release opening.

Oh, and I'll second "Stripes".

The scene included news that Jack's body was not found in the snow.

As a result, Stanley re-added the scene of the frozen Jack into the cut.

But either way, you're correct.

Some releases like Dumb & Dumber and The Shining could've easily had both cuts just by seamless interfacing. Fox are very good at including both cuts like this.

- The original Star Wars trilogy for obvious reasons
- The theatrical cut of The Warriors. I don't mind the comic book transitions in theory, but I hate how they interrupt the flow of certain scenes and the new prologue doesn't work for me at all.
- The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is one of my favourite films, yet I've only ever seen the extended cut. I could do without some of the re-inserted sequences, especially since it's obvious an older Eli Wallach dubbed his younger self.
- The alterations to The Evil Dead bother me, however minor.
- The UK releases of I Spit on Your Grave and The New York Ripper are censored for sexual violence, although this is the fault of the BBFC.

Sony has been one of the worst offenders when it comes to omitting the theatrical cut: (the previously mentioned Superbad and Stripes), Revenge (1990), Donnie Brasco, Ghost Rider, Talladega Nights, etc.

Tropic Thunder (from Dreamworks/Paramount) is another annoying one, too.

Just makes sense they'd keep releasing the one Director's Cut master they already have. And the print was never in need of Patton/French Connection remastering, so they'll probably never come back to it, either. Darn.
