I don't shed a tear. I spent way to much money lol

Stoked about Amazon.com though, not that I do orders over $100 often, but it might tempt me to hold off until I see multiple titles to order in one go.

Easy to get to that if you're pre-ordering 5-6 new release titles going for $20-25 a title. Well worth locking in those pre-orders, getting the pre-order price guarantee and free shipping.

I've contacted Amazon about the possibility of extending this to Australia. Being that we're just a hop across the ocean it seems like a weird choice not to include us in the deal. Same shipping rates + same delivery estimates = seems like a good enough reason for it to be applied to Australia as well.

Considering shipping to NZ is more expensive than shipping to AUS, does seem weird you're not included in the offer..

Actually you're right. I forgot that the per item charge was more so yes their choice is even more unusual considering that.

Maybe they just want too increase the buying from those countries?

If they don't include us Aussies that would be sad, i would do this as I have been holding off on titles as i hate the shipping prices they charge, but i am happy to see that for you New Zealanders as you people pay way too much for all your stuff i have noticed with clothes dvds and video games.

Onya NZ.

Any information on who they're using for the shipping? Some deal with them may be what's decided the choice of destinations.

Or it may be a controlled test by Amazon to see if it's a viable way to boost sales. When Amazon ceased our free shipping from the UK, it was described as a trial, even though it hadn't generally been called that before.

They might have some direct routes into each of those regions. They are both shipping companies and airlines that do a number of routes direct to Auckland (I work in this space)

When does it run until? I'd like to hope I can drop an early January order. **** ordering anything now. Sounds like a great way to lose mail!

One good sign about this arrangement is the fact that there is no end date. With the Amazon UK trial although it was never called a "trial" as such it did have an end date (October 2011 if I recall). About a week prior to the end they extended that date to January 19, 2012 and they simply let it run its course that time.

With this one there's no period for this arrangement which may mean it's expected to be an ongoing shipping option. Certainly a good sign and hopefully one which will be extended to Australia and surrounding countries. They might simply want to see what the take up is like.

I'm pretty certain the reason they are doing it is rising shipping costs. It might sound weird in the face of costs going up to suddenly start offering free shipping but I suspect that their motives are to increase profits by limiting the number of packages sent. Pre-orders will naturally get sent out as they become available but if you do one big order that they can ship then the pick/pack time and cost of that shipment would be significantly less than shipping 6+ orders of 1-2 items whereby the shipping cost isn't all that much cheaper.

For them that bulk shipment might save substantially more in terms of their overheads so this sort of deal might motivate people to consolidate orders and it would make it far easier and cost effective for Amazon in the long run.

Fingers and toes crossed for this coming to Australia (I expect it will - just a matter of time!).

It can certainly cause you to buy more. I know from shopping on ezydvd that if you find 1 or two items that are on special...the free shipping tends to force you to buy other titles that you may not need or want just to get the free shipping. So while they lose on the shipping they will sell more items to offset this loss...and maybe even make more money out of us.

Personally the lower normal shipping rate like Aussie gets would be better for me since I can guarantee I'll never make an order that will get over the threshold. Pity it's so high compared to the £25 that Amazon UK used to have, dunno why they couldn't do it for US$50 or something
