My pleasure!

It has already been screened a number of times this year, so hopefully a disc is on the way.

For any Bogdanovich fans in the UK, "Squirrels to the Nuts" will be playing at the Prince Charles Cinema on Monday, March 6th.

Booked tickets for myself and the Mrs. I enjoyed the theatrical cut when it came out but always got the feeling a better movie was hiding within it. And now I can watch it at my favourite cinema!

Who knows if this movie will see a blu-ray release, but I certainly hope so. Bogdanovich is one of the greats but so few of his movies are available for purchase.

Having now watched the original cut 'Squirrels to the Nuts', the studio really sullied this movie. The 'She's Funny That Way' cut is a fairly standard romcom with a few chuckles. In its original form the movie is probably the funniest of the last decade, and unmistakeably a Peter Bogdanovich movie. I can't emphasise enough that the two cuts are totally different movies. To any Bogdanovich fans or even those with a passing interest - watch Squirrels to the Nuts if you get the chance. It is a beautifully executed screwball comedy, to be ranked along with Bogdanovich's best comedies.

Biggest differences;
  • Every scene has more room to breathe, and ends up much, much funnier for it. Many jokes that completely slipped under the radar in SFTW turned out very funny in SttN, given the proper space to show the actors' comic timing.
  • Rhys Ifans' character is given much more of a presence, and ends up stealing any scenes he's in. Most of his reactions to the goings-on were cut from SFTW, but given centre stage in SttN. His facial expressions as he recognises Poots' call girl during her audition and lords it over Owen Wilson's character were some of the biggest laughs of the movie. That these parts ever got cut is mind-boggling.
  • The obsessive judge has a lot more scenes, as does the detective he hires. The detective's running gag of stalking Izzy, completely absent from the SFTW cut, got big laughs.
  • No more crummy imitation Woody Allen music. The soundtrack has proper songs from Sinatra and Tom Petty, both much more appropriate for Bogdanovich's final movie.
  • Comic situations are established much more clearly - in SttN the audience gradually learns that the entire cast will all dine at the same Italian restaurant, and anticipates the resulting chaos. In SFTW the scene at the restaurant is just shown and quickly moved on from.
  • The movie ends as any good screwball comedy should, with a big scene featuring all the main characters. Owen Wilson's character (as a semi-stand-in for Bogdanovich) gets the final joke.
All in all, the lesson movie studios might take from this is that if you hire one of the greatest directors of all time to make a movie for you, let him be the one to make the damn movie.

Lionsgate has released a restored director’s cut of the late Peter Bogdanovich‘s final film, “Squirrels to the Nuts,” on digital platforms.

“Squirrels to the Nuts” was originally released as “She’s Funny That Way” in 2014. Bogdanovich directed the film and co-wrote it with Louise Stratten. The “Squirrels to the Nuts” cast includes Owen Wilson, Imogen Poots, Kathryn Hahn, Cybill Shepherd, Austin Pendleton, Will Forte, Joanna Lumley and Richard Lewis. Jennifer Aniston and Rhys Ifans also appear, alongside cameos from Graydon Carter, Colleen Camp and George Morfogen.

“Peter Bogdanovich was one of the most accomplished filmmakers of his generation as well as a respected writer, actor, producer, and film historian,” Ron Schwartz, Motion Picture Group’s chief operating officer, said in a statement. “At Lionsgate, we have a long and proud history of working with acclaimed filmmakers, and we are delighted to present the final movie from one of the greats. For film aficionados, this presentation of ‘Squirrels to the Nuts’ is the way Peter Bogdanovich wanted it to be seen, in a fully restored director’s cut available on all digital formats.”

The Museum of Modern Art showed a version of the director’s cut in 2022. Frank Marshall and Adria Petty worked on the restoration with Bogdanovich’s family members.

Bogdanovich, known for “The Last Picture Show” and “Paper Moon,” died at the age of 82 in 2022.

“Peter was never satisfied with the original theatrical release,” Stratten, who was also a producer on the film and Bogdanovich’s former wife, said in a statement. “We would watch it and say, ‘There’s a better movie there.’”

I would assume there would not be any odd rights issues, the original BD, and the new digital release, are both via Lionsgate after all… so I suspect this ends up coming as a Lionsgate Limited release. Literally stumbled upon this looking into Wes Anderson, but movie sounds pretty great, will definitely pick up if it gets a new release.

I'd hope for a physical release some way down the line, especially as I'm not even able to watch it currently as there's no digital UK release.

The movie played very well when I saw it in a packed cinema. I've read online that the digital release version has had a score added to it, which I'm a bit trepidatious about - it was just fine without.
