![]() http://www.sanbase.org/ If anybody truly wants to see the 3D potential of their tv, they should strongly consider checking out "Geography of the Universe" by San Base studios: It's just eye-candy CGI artwork in motion, but it's like nothing I've ever seen before. The "camera" is in constant motion, slowly passing through the walls of structures as if they weren't there, moving through the incredibly complex worlds San Base has created. It's hard to describe the effect, but check out the youtube clips to get an idea of how it looks in motion. Each world is unique and full of stunning imagery, and the 1080p images are incredibly sharp and colorful, as the images were originally rendered in 4k. The 3D is by far some of the best I have ever seen on my tv. It's incredibly deep, pushing the limits of your 3D tv. There's so much going on with the intricate structures constantly in motion that you almost feel like you are in those worlds. It's just mindless eye-candy, and some may find it repetitive, but I find it amazing for relaxation, and it's easy to get lost and entranced in these worlds. The 3D imagery here is far superior to what you see in Hollywood films these days. Sadly, the discs are BD-R discs, not pressed. My copy simply would not play on either blu-ray player. One player wouldn't read it at all and the other got stuck on the menu. Perhaps something was wrong with the structure of the disc? I scanned it in my PC blu-ray drive and it tested 100% readable, so I ripped it and watched it that way on my 3D media player, but it was a step I shouldn't have needed to do. So that may be cause for concern for some people, which is very understandable. They also sell an earlier disc called "Function of Reality" which uses the same type of cgi, and that disc has the same stunning level of 3D as "Geography of the Universe". This is truly demo material. |

One thing I'd add about this title and "Function of Reality" is unfortunately there are a lot of compression artifacts. It's hard not to see them - with all the intricate details and the fact that it's in 3D, the artifacting is very apparent. I'd still recommend this based on the amazing imagery and stunning depth.

A sample of the San Base "eye-candy CGI artwork" is found on Vol.7 of the region-free Best Of 3D Vol.7-9 Blu-ray 3D from Amazon Germany.

I just stumbled across and ordered Geography of the Universe on the San Base website. Since it doesn't seem to be sold at any retailers or have a UPC, is it still the case that it is limited to direct sales only?
For anyone interested, here's the review from Andrew Miller of Le Cinema Paradiso: Quote:

A bit hyperbolic, that review, no?
To be honest, the 3D itself is absolutely reference-quality. It's quite stunning and I dare say most people probably have no idea just what their 3D TV is capable of, especially if all they watch are weak Hollywood contemporary 3D films. This feature truly opens up your TV and shows you a world you have never seen. The imagery is in constant motion, twisting and morphing as you slowly glide across the ever-changing landscapes, literally tearing open as you pass through objects and rebuilding and re-forming as you pass out the other side. The color is gorgeous and each segment has a totally different look to it's "world". It's truly something to see even in 2D. In 3D it's breathtaking. Sadly, my copy did suffer from compression artifacting, and the intricate nature of the imagery was definitely impacted by this issue. It reminds me of the older Shout Factory blu-ray transfers with their encoding issues. That, combined with the fact that the disc itself was unplayable in both of my players - likely due to either the menu structure or perhaps the fact that it was a burned disc, may be a cause of hesitation for some. Perhaps those issues are worked out now. Or maybe not. It is definitely one of the more stunning 3D demo discs I have ever seen, and the content is 100% unique. Highly recommended with a bit of caution due to the disc issues I experienced. Marcuslaw, yes, the only place I'm aware of to buy it is through their website directly. Let us know here if your disc plays without issue. I'm curious now. |

I'll post the technical specs for the disk once BDinfo is done scanning. I glanced at it in progress and Geography indeed offers only a DD 5.1 track (48 kHz, 448 kbps). Last edited by Marcuslaw; 08-11-2016 at 04:37 PM. Reason: Added audio info |

Thanks to the posts here I just bought lichtmond 1,2 and 3d masterpieces vol. 1,2. Always happy to see more experimental 3d. I like synesthesia type movies so I'm sure I'll enjoy Lichtmond. The San Base stuff reminds me of those early shorts collections from the dawn of cgi. Just interesting stuff to look at. Sadly I'm not likely to buy Geography of the Universe as long as it's using burned discs. I'll keep an eye on them though.

![]() I have this, I don't see any region coding on the outer box or any of the individual boxes or discs. If nobody else who's region free can test it at some point I guess I can, I haven't watched any of them yet. Back on topic, I saw the San Base clip on Best Of 3D and while the 3D was nice, the rest of it was just like wallpaper to me. I didn't like the way the camera floated through structures, it just reminded me that what I was watching was fancy computer graphics like I used to do back in the 1990s. |
