How exactly have you come to that conclusion?
1. Assuming no bonus features, the content and length of the film (and quality of compression) defines the amount of data generated in preparing an encode. Quality does not mean blindly going for a BD-50 where BD-25 will suffice. 2. The precise advantage of modern compression techniques like Mpeg-4 AVC is that they allow for smaller file sizes than before with little noticeable loss of detail. 3. This film, at least from the screens seems to me digitally shot, which again means the HD master will be smaller than if 35mm film were being scanned. Even companies like Eureka and Criterion have used BD-25's for releases (or stuffed 2 movies onto a single BD-50) where they suffice. Do you think they would do that if it led to, as you surmise, this big compromise over quality? Edit: I just did a brief calculation that if you used a BD-25 for a 98min talky movie with a (generous for this type of film) 3Mbps DTS-HD MA 5.1 track and 640kbps DD 5.1 track - The entire audio track would take about 3GB say. Let's put in another 1-2GB for authoring menus. With 20GB left over for doing the video, you could achieve bitrates of 27-28Mbps, way more than enough for an excellent quality image unless you have a moron for an encoder. For example the US BD for The Avengers, an action heavy flick with many scenes of fast motion, has an average bitrate of about 24Mbps. Didn't hear any complaints about quality on that one ![]() Last edited by ravenus; 07-14-2014 at 12:22 PM. |
