Default Organizational Exceptions

For the most par I just keep my collection in alphabetical order. DVD next to Bluray. Steelbooks & special packaging (thats relatively the same size, I.E. digibooks) all right down the line. I feel like this just makes it the easiest.

Aside from genre organization, does anyone who does the same have any notable exceptions?

Myself: I have been a LONG running zombie fan from like way way back. Well before the "craze" took over. So at my old place (bachelor pad) I had a spereate skinny movie shelf next to my standard rack, and kept JUST my zombie collection on it. It held about 50 movies or so with room for a few more on each shelf. I also kept my Romero run (the '... Of The Dead' series and The Crazies) separate on a bookshelf sort of as its own thing, since he started my obsession. I also had my box sets on their own shelf.

Just moved in with my lady and to conserve footprint space I ditched my two (and little zombie) movie racks and got one big ass one thats almost full, WITHOUT the zombie collection or most her movies.

So I'm gonna have the zombie shelf somewhere, and she collects the After Dark 8 Films To Die For Festival (or whatever the hell they're called) specifically... so we pulled all those out to go together. Also she had this goofball way of organizing all her movies by color of the case spine so I'm letting her do that with all the kids/animated stuff on a separate shelf.

I dunno why anyone wou;d really care or why I care about your movies but it seemed like a topic. Do you pull certain things out of your collection and give them a special spot?

Collection is alphabetical, except all James Bond movies are under B for Bond and in chronological order of release. Same with a few others like Indiana Jones.

Only problem come with ones like these:

I didn't think about Bond pictures... I keep all mine up front with the numbers for 007 since its at the top of most the packaging.

Two packs I usually just put in the book, one of those jumbo 4x4 CD binders, and store or trash the cases. The book I keep sorta grouped by genre but don't bother alphabetizing.

I organize my movie shelf based on what I think is the most aesthetically pleasing look.

Which, for the most part, is by color coordination.

I'll break up directors if their film cases certain films are different colors.

...it looks so much better on the shelf.

Mine is in sections: Steelbooks, TV boxsets, movie boxsets, slip boxes, Sony Anniversary slipcovers, Reel Heroes slipcovers, normal slipcovers, short slipcovers and normal amarays, each section is in alphabetical order

Before joining this forum I never realized how much slip covers were a thing...

I've kept some, but just as often I just throw them away.

I have a large tower for DVDs (since I was collecting them for much longer) and a smaller one for Blu-rays. For the most part everything in each is in alphabetical order. Exceptions are series, which are kept together in release order under the general series name. (Ex. all Bond movies in order under B.)

Only other way I break them down is that all movies are first, followed by TV shows, then any miscellaneous stuff like documentaries, stand-up specials, etc. Concerts and music video collections I actually keep entirely separate in my CD cabinet.

I only keep them if they feature completely different artwork from the case cover or are for a major favorite. Otherwise, if they just repeat the same art for a movie that's not a huge favorite, I toss them in the recycling bin.

Upgrade is inevitable. What do you do with your old versions? Some have sentimental value. I have all sorts of Star Wars and Blade Runner sets going back to VHS and don't plan on parting with them. But what about others?

I have a bunch of old DVDs that I know I'll never watch again because they are either non anamorphic with those black bars on all four sides, or they are enhanced for widescreen TVs and are pixilated.

Seems a shame to just toss them, so I hold on to them, even though I have upgraded most of them to blu-ray or UV.

Are those old DVDs ever worth anything?

My organization is not super simple. I have a group for each director, or in some cases, writer, and then with the remainder I divide them into genres of drama, comedy, thriller/horror, science fiction, and action/western/Crime. Each category is sorted by release date. If I have a series of films I will put them together even if there are films chronologically between them. However, I did not put 2010 with 2001 because I'm not putting a hole in the middle of my Kubrick collection.

I sort genra do that cause it helps when you want to watch a certain type of movie. Have two special categories Clint Eastwood films and Car chase films.

Question about older versions when upgraded to a new one. Usually sale them sometimes will put the dvd in with the blu case. Took my special edition of Dual and put it with the blu. Since I like the dvd's artwork better than the blu on that one. Trimmed the slip down to fit the blu case.

On slip cases: yeah I keep them if there's something special or different about them for sure.

Old keepers DVDs: I do have few old DVDs I've kept because of packaging art or whatnot. I have some old cardboard flap case DVDs of Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome even though I have the Blu box set in the tin for the original Mad Max trilogy.

On the split up collections: I mean I guess yeah when its your own collections its not hard to remember whats what but I prefer straight alphabetical right down the line for the most part.

Though I thought of some more... I have my Dark Knight & DKR in line after Batman Begins. I have a chunk of Batman stuff... I don't actually care for the Nolanverse as much as the Tim Burton films. I don't have the two toy comercial train wrecks but adopted Mask Of The Phantasm when the lady moved in and I got her a stack of the new Bat-toons for Christmas and I have a set of old 40s serials too.

How does every one organize their MCU collection? Right now i have mine Ant-Man (mostly cuz it is the only one i don't have a slip for, would probably have it last otherwise), Avengers, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, Thor, Thor 2, Captain America, Captain America 2 & Guardians of the Galaxy. So right now i pretty much have it in chronological order except for the sequels and The Avengers, i have Avengers first because it starts with an A and it feels right to start my MCU collection with that. I don't have Age of Ultron yet, but if i did have it i'm not sure if i would just put it after the first Avengers or after Guardians.

Criterions by spine # (DVD and Blu integrated here)
Blu-Ray's alphabetically, counting definite articles but not indefinite ones
DVD's, the same way
VHS's, the same way
Criterion laserdiscs by spine #
Laserdiscs, the same as above

No special section for slipcovers. Don't like other special boxes and don't own any (although Dr. Strangelove may make me break the rules) but wouldn't seperate them either. No special section for any other labels, or actors or directors or countries.

Further comment on alphabetization: Again, I count definite articles but not indefinite ones. That means there are a number of films beginning with "A" at the beginning, but, say, "The Sting" is with the S's. Also I put numbers at the beginning (so say, 10,000 BC would be at the beginning if I owned it (not sure why that horrid film came to mind), not in the "T"'s) unless the number is actually spelled out (so another horrid film, Seven Pounds, would be under the "S"'s). Numbers are arranged by first digit, then second digit and so on (just like letters), NOT numerically. So 101 Dalmations comes before 21 Grams, as 1<2 even though 21<101 (note: I am considering changing this).

I have the phase one box set so it pretty much takes care of itself and sits out on my entertainment center. The rest are just on my shelf alphabetically.

Don't own any MCU films but if I did I would keep them in chronological order in the M section, between whatever film comes before "Marvel Cinematic Universe" and whatever film comes after.

i.e. it would be

....
Man on Fire (say)
Iron Man
Incredible Hulk
...
Age of Ultron
Ant Man
The Mask (say)
...

Similar to James Bond
