Was just reading reviews of the film on iTunes and one reviewer said that the digital copy has been cropped to 2:35.1. Can anyone confirm this?

Yeah. If it fills up your screen, then it's in the right aspect ratio. If you see black bars on the top and bottom, the cropped the image at the top and bottom and that's the wrong aspect ratio of NOAH.

How big? 1.85:1 should have very thin bars on top and bottom if no over scan is enabled

Could you look at the BD.com screenshots and find a comparable image?

It'd be interesting to see if the movie was intended for 2.40:1 at one point in time.

It was never intended. Saw the film twice in the theatre. 1:85.1 is the aspect ratio. Blu-Ray.com's screenshots are also the same aspect ratio. And, I don't think the film was shot on Super 35 either.

I haven't watched the movie yet but my screen shot was from 8m35s

Someone with the Blu next week might be able to do a comparison.

I also saw it twice. This is the first that I've heard/seen it being shown in 2.40:1.

By the way, it was shot mixed media, including Super 35.

Hmm, didn't know it was shot on Super 35. Well, this is all very interesting. The iTunes version might not be "technically" incorrect.

I wonder if the UV version is in 2:35.1.

Super35 has been commonly used for television production and films like The Godfather: Part III, hence the "Super 1.85" designation. It doesn't mean it will be 2.35.


I always redeem my stuff on Vudu (if I can) anyway.

I hope you understand that iTunes doesn’t have control with movies aspect ratio. This may vary depending on how the provider wanted them to be sold in the store. I apologize for this inconvenience.

I suggest that you add you comment to the move’s product page. just go to iTunes, search for the item and choose “Ratings and Review”.

So, basically, instead of asking Paramount for the proper encode, they want customers to buy a faulty product and complain about it.

If you bought a blu-ray which had the wrong aspect ratio would you complain to the store where you got it or the distributor of the blu-ray?

If you look on the following deadwood thread (page 12), a distributor has completely refused to fix a blu-ray issued with dodgy sound. Incidentally that distributor is also Paramount.
