Default Thrill of the Blind Buy

Who likes blind buying there Blu rays? Surely I'm not the only one who does it alot?

The majority of my Blu rays are blind buys and I've found some amazing films this way. I research titles first and have a fair idea on what I will like, but I've been pleseantly surprised by alot of titles and now I love blind buying. Nothing beats getting a nice Blu I havn't seen, opening it up and watching it for the first time.

Now I kinda like blind buying more than buying movies I've already seen.

I agree blind buying rocks when you end up liking the movie but when the movie is bad then blind buying sucks. I used to do it all the time but after too many duds(Premonition, Happy Feet, Reaping, etc..) I rent pretty much everything I did not see yet except maybe a few I know I will love.

Good idea for a thread. I don't blind buy much, I basically only buy movies that I have already seen with the exception of a couple (Terminator Salvation for one). I prefer to see before I buy.

That being said, it is pretty fun to buy a movie I haven't seen before and watch it for the first time on Blu-ray as well. It can make sense - if you don't see a movie in the theater - to buy it, as it's cheaper than a ticket + popcorn. But if it's a movie with so-so reviews, a definite rental for me.

Some of mine are 'blind buys' as well. A genre that I love (horror, classic, etc.) I buy it because I know 99% of the time I like it alot.

Half my BDs are blind buys, you win some you lose some.
Most of my blind buys are $10 or less.

I tend to blind buy quite a bit but I normally have a good idea about whether or not I'll like a film. For example, just yesterday I blind bought Easy A and I loved it.

Thumbs up

Blind buying can be fun. My last blind buy was 3:10 to Yuma. I heard it was good and it was on sale so I took the plunge. Turned to be a really good western. GREAT SUCCESS!

I love blind buying its a definite thrill! Of course I research my movies and have well established my likes and dislikes concerning movies. Over 90+ of my blus are blind buys making that over 50% of my movies are blind buys and honestly ive only been dissapointed a handful of times, otherwise its been GREAT SUCCESS!

I agree. I have blind bought about about 85 Titles for my collection. I love to blind buy! It is really pretty fun. I have been luck so far, as i have not bought anything that I have not enjoyed. My fiance is not into blind buying, so it may slow down a little bit until i show her the light

Glad this has taken off and I'm not alone. I've hardly been dissapointed either (although I thought Inception was terrible), due to known what I like. Although if its a blind buy I normally only pick it up if its cheap.

Some of my blind buys have turned out to be some of my favs of all time.

So yeah overall my success rate has been high with blind buys.

If you read reviews before blind buying, then it's rare that you'll find yourself disappointed.

But yeah, I love blind buying. It's so much fun but be forewarned....it can be addicting.

If you find a reviewer you fully trust then yes but I know of several movies that got bad reviews for the movie but I loved them. Only you can truly be the judge.

You have to read several different reviews. Before blind buying, I read reviews at Blu-ray.com, DVDTalk, IMDB, and several customer reviews all over. And I may ask a friend or two if they saw the movie and ask if they liked it.

And I really try to avoid buying movies with bad reviews that I enjoy. The reason is....it's embarrassing to display on the shelf. When friends come over and see my collection, they'll all say, "Why did you buy that crap?" I like to own as many highly rated movies as possible because I want to be proud of my collection. But yes, I do own a few movies that I love that have gotten bad reviews.

I do read several reviews for my movies but nobody truly has the same taste as me so I never fully agree with any review I read. Most of the time I will read the whole review but only fully trust the score for the AQ,PQ, and bonus features. I then just rent the movie to see what I thought of it myself.

for a movie that gets good reviews, or seems like one that i would like (for example, actors i like, or a director i like) i will blind buy it if i didn't see it in theaters. it really is cheaper than going with a date to a movie and getting popcorn/icee/etc. so i look at it that way.

but a lot of movies i would rent first, if it didn't get good reviews, or if i'm very unsure, i do have netflix and go to blockbuster once and a while. i refuse to blind buy something like 'Premonition' for example (on my bottom 10 of all time list!)

Yeah I really hate that movie also but I blind bought it because of Sandra Bullock. That movie is one of the reasons I try not to blind buy much anymore. But I do blond buy a lot on DVD still due to the rock bottom prices.

True. I have found that a very good formula. I know what kind of movies I enjoy. When I compare that to recommendations from this site and from friends; I am very successful.

If I miss a film I want to see in theaters then I will normally rent it. I rarely blind buy because I hate to spend money on something I know I may regret buying. The only blind buys I have had this year were Sherlock Holmes, The Book of Eli, and Inception and thankfully I enjoyed all of them enough to keep them.
