Sad news indeed. A fine Actor, and a terrific Director to boot.

He'll be sadly missed.

RIP Dickie

Well, he was 90, and the last movie he did was some 7-8 years ago. Unless someone expected him to live forever, there's little point to feeling bad for his demise. He lived a rich, full life and one would do better to celebrate that than to mourn his passing.

Not a bad age to go though.

Amen! I'm celebrating Lord Dickie's superb and varied career by watching his fine collaboration with Carl Forman (writer/producer), the bio of Churchill, "Young Winston."

I agree. The last few years have been horrible for him, his daughter & granddaughter dying in that huge tsunami, his wife's dementia & his own very ill health. I think he was ready to go. We should celebrate his amazing life & body of work.

He was a chancellor at my university and when you graduate he gives you a your certificate. When I collected mine I told him how much I loved him in miracle on 34th street. He's was such a cool guy!

RIP

His next film is going to be a corker starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robin Williams. Shame we won't be able to see it but they'll be having fun making it wherever they are.

I had BBCThree on and the 60 seconds news mentioned they'd just heard he'd died within the last few minutes. It was a slightly surreal way to mention it!

Those BBC3 60 seconds news reports can be awful.

I guess by their nature they're short of time and aimed at the younger audience but when James Garner died they summed him up with "...he played the older version of Ryan Gosling's character in The Notebook"!

Tribute programme at 10:30pm on BBC1 tonight.

Must be a repeat unless they had it on stand-by.

Just watched the Great Escape and remembered James Garner's gone too.

Big X and the Scrounger, RIP.

Attenborough was a terrific actor, there's one scene of his from Flight of the Phoenix which is unforgettable....the moment he
[Show spoiler]finds out Hardy Kruger is a model plane designer, and bursts out laughing...eventually ending up in tears of desperation.
It's a marvellous piece of acting.
