Default Predictions for 1st wave of 4K releasees/ Timing announcements.

We are supposed to have 4K format hitting the market in 2015. When do you think we will start hearing about the 1st wave of releases - and what do you want to see? Hopefully it doesn't take long for the boutique labels to step up once the format is *officially* finalized.

Some of my most wanted discs on 4K: (i.e. catalog titles that seem highly realistic)

2001: A Space Odyssey
Lawrence of Arabia
Blade Runner
Star Wars Original Trilogy (since it looks like I'm skipping this on blu-ray, might keep waiting for 4K)
Samsara/Baraka (skipped on blu, but I'm sure this will instantly be reference material on 4K).

From there, I just hope that we get boutique labels stepping in and driving demand for some deeper catalog titles to get new 4K scans (particularly ones that were not treated well on blu-ray).

Looks like you listed the ones that come from 8K sources. I think their chances are good. However, I don't envision them releasing Samsara or Baraka right away; even though they would look gorgeous on 4K and would be great demo material, I don't think the studios would see those as profitable releases (although I could be wrong; seeing those come out in 4K might convince me to get a 4K TV ).

I think some of the pre-existing 4K remasered stuff might be easier and more profitable for them to release first. Those titles will likely include:

All the Spider-Man movies (1, 2, 3, TASM, TASM2)
Fargo
Ghostbusters
RoboCop (1987)
Rocky
The Terminator

That being said, I'm not well-versed in how individual studios are approaching 4K. If it goes the same way Blu-Ray did, we'll likely see a number of classics coming out first, and a lot of popular new titles. The real question should be, how many will be true, full-blown 4K scans, and how many will be upconverted?

I currently have no interest in 4K, but if it does take off, LOTR will be the one thing that might convince me to invest in it. I don't foresee that as being a launch title (The Hobbit films might be though).

The Hobbit films were not finished at 4K. I highly doubt that they'll be released as launch titles.

And I wouldn't agree that we had "a number of classics" first up on Blu-ray. It seemed to me to be more like a bunch of mediocre new movies and some back catalogue stuff with the odd gem mixed in.

Sony will hopefully chip in with the most stuff because, well, they've got the most stuff! But there are still 4K masters floating out there for several titles, like all of Nolan's Batman movies, several James Bond flicks, and those recent MGM 4K titles. Lionsgate could cash in on the last Hunger Games movie by releasing Catching Fire in 4K. It's tough to say who's gonna do what though.

I'm hoping that Warners will do a 4K Kubrick boxset at some point, that'll be awesome.

I hope there's some kind of "Certified for 4K" label for discs, they should distinguish themselves from releases with upconverted effects which I'm sure will be in abundance!

I expect a huge wave of Sony titles at launch. And probably a handful, at least, of titles from other studios. I hope for more than that though.

As to other studios, I'm REALLY hoping Warner Bros. jumps in right away with releases like Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy, The Matrix Trilogy, and countless other catalog titles that could use the vast improvement that would be possible.

Personally, I also see a 4K Blu-ray of Terminator 2 being a launch (or close to launch) title.

Good call on the Matrix movies. By and large they were finished on film so a true 4K transfer is viable. (The VFX will have been done at 2K or thereabouts, but at least there's no worries about having to upscale that stuff because it'll be scanned from the negative along with everything else, it just won't resolve 4K detail. I wonder what those 1K dinos look like in the 4K transfer of Jurassic Park?)
