United Kingdom 4k Blu-ray for dec 2015

The Blu-Ray Disc Association has revealed that 4K Blu-Ray discs will likely be in circulation by Christmas 2015.

Michael Hooger, the company's lead communications strategist, said that licensing for the next-generation format should be wrapped up in the first half of next year, paving the way for commercial availability.

Have they actually fixed some of the other issues with the format, like lack of support for unusual frame rates, or is it just higher resolution?

Question about the 4K and Dolby Atmos thing. Will the Onkyo SKH-410's work on top of any old speakers? I have Q Acoustic Q2000i's. Or will I have to get new speakers too?

I know I will have to buy a new receiver, but don't want to add extra speakers too, the SKH-410's would do me fine.

Having conversed with a Sony rep recently, he said that they've no plans to release 4K players.

As a service technician, I also visit the homes of many customers on a day to day basis and only one in ten actually have a Blu-Ray player and most don't even know what Hi-Def or even what Blu-Ray actually is. So I cannot see it becoming a success at all but merely a niche product to those with the cash.

Most people's priorities are actually in feeding their families and keeping a roof over their heads, not spending obscene amounts on new equipment and discs. For those film enthusiasts I have chatted to, streaming is the word I commonly hear. 4K will die on its rear end.

Cool, thanks for the info. Makes a potential upgrade slightly less expensive.

I will support 4K (maybe not RIGHT away - well, we'll see I just might).
But I can see 4K doing poorly, the average person won't feel like "upgrading" their discs, won't have a TV large enough to notice the difference, and even if they I'm sure plenty won't notice anyway (like some say with DVD and Blu-ray), needing to buy new equipment again, likely more expensive disc prices.
But I'm one of those who will be all over it. Though I don't see me replacing as many blurays as I replaced dvds, 1 because I think blu-rays will still look great, and 2 because a lot of blu-rays that I own I don't see coming to 4k, like many of the older obscure horrors that have only just recieved 2k transfers, and I think these blurs may be the best they'll looke, like The Final Terror, or Curtains (to name only 2 of the most recent ones).
Though I'll see if I change my mind when (and in other cases if) we cross that road.
I'm looking forward to this though.

Im glad its happening but I really cant see me investing - at least not for a few years anyway. I don't think many people have the kind of living space to get the benefit from this - not to mention the size screen to notice much difference. I know I haven't!

This is going to be a niche product but Ill be watching with interest (and not buying!)

It was my understanding that Blu-rays already required quite a degree of compression to fit all the data onto the disc. Surely with a jump in picture and audio quality higer capacity discs are a necessity.

Does anyone know if 4K will have native support for different frame rates? One of the big issues with Blu-ray is it only supports 24fps, which has let to lots of jiggery-pokery to get silent films shot at 16fps (and others) to look correct on the format. Nevertheless, considering how slow uptake on Blu-ray has been in the wider market, I can't see many people leaping to support 4K.

I'd rather sell off all my blu-rays & equipment than invest in a new format this soon. Its definitely for a specific 'rich' niche market, not for me.

They are probably aware that this wont be the next consumer class product for people that wont go bayond 60 inch screens . ..

I hope this will be some high quality niche market product . We dont need another dvd replacement. ..

It is not going to be a new format. It will be an extension to Blu-ray.

Not necessarily a necessity once you bring more efficient compression (HEVC) into the mix.

Replace "4k players" with "High Def movie players" and "4K will die on its rear end" with "1080p will die on its rear end" and you have a mirror of the same argument that was used against 1080p HD (be it HD DVD or BD) in 2004/2005.

I do agree that it will be more of a niche, but that's fine for me. I think, in many ways, Blu-ray has benefited from its market position. It's successful enough to the point where the players and discs are both cheap and plentiful, but it's not at the level where companies can release just any old crap transfer.
