Well... no... but I am in the same boat where I find myself wanting to paint my white popcorned ceiling black. Several people I have spoken to swear that you can roller it if you get a segmented roller with a thick nap and only go one direction with it. My room is 14x32 feet and I'm not sold on roller painting it. I may spray it. The downside to that is that is more prep masking everything off though when spraying.

Frankly the whole process turns me off enough where I keep debating if I should go with a black ceiling; or do I stay white. If I did that I could maybe put up some black fabric covered acoustical panels on the ceiling near my screen. Jury is out with me on this whole painting black thing.

I did it once....never again. I ended up having someone come in to spray it. I despise popcorn ceilings.

I'm thinking of doing my room up in a dark "*****haus" red including the ceiling I think the only way I can do it is if I spray paint it on. My room has been white since I moved in here when I was a 5, I got popcorn ceilings and the same blinds Ive had since I moved in which are filthy and a PITA because they take up a lot of space and not sitting in the window sill.

Well I just painted a textured ceiling in the kitchen with my dad. It went pretty easy, however it was not popcorned and it was just staying white. I think the basement ceiling wouldn't intimidate me so much if I wasn't thinking about going from white to black.

Let us know how it goes.

Some friends and I were helping another friend paint his popcorn ceiling. We used Valspar paint from lowes....... It was suggested that we go with valspar as it was very thick and we were told to get the thickest roller they had and go in one direction. Good thing the valspar acted as a primer when it finally dried we ended up renting a paint sprayer. There really was not any way to get it evenly applied. When we used the paint sprayer it finally looked right.

I can only imagine that using a paint sprayer would have been that much more effective if we initially went in that direction.

Large nap is the way to go, I also use the paint that goes on pink and dries white. makes it alot easier to see missed spots...

if you do it biggest nap you can find for sure, then what i found works well is after your done and everything is dry... take a sponge on a stick and dip it in paint and go around and look for white spots... it was easy on mine since it was black

I rolled my popcorn ceiling no problems in my basement home theater. Think it turned out great and probably better for sound leaving the popcorn there.

The trick was to only roll once and let it fully dry, never twice! If the popcorn gets too wet it will come apart. So it may take 3-4 applications of paint, especially in black like mine. But I think it came out fantastic! There are special rollers for ceilings with texture, so please use the correct roller and paint.

Did the exact same thing, except with a sponge brush. Spend an hour doing it too.

You really need to be careful with popcorn ceilings. A lot of the older homes with pop corn ceilings from the late 70's and earlier had asbestos in them. If you're unsure, have it tested before you mess with any popcorn ceilng. I don't want to freak anyone out, but even touching the ceiling with brushes and rollers have the potential to loosen asbestos particles and make them airborne.

I've done it.

1. get a foam sectioned roller
2. thin the paint about 10%
3. roll in one direction.
4. use 2-3 coats...

works like a charm. I did a sloped ceiling about 22x12 section. looks great and no need to rip it all down and re-texture

Sorry I don't have a better picture but I just rolled mine on with a roller designed for rough surfaces and it went on fine. Took 4 coats to really even out though. After the first and second coat you will drive yourself crazy finding all the little white dots you missed
