Thumbs up Don Bluth's Thumbelina (3/6/12)

Thumbelina Blu-ray

Thumbelina Blu-ray Review

Don Bluth's 1994 animated film Thumbelina just went up for Blu-ray pre-order on Amazon today! Release date is 3/6/12.

I'm not the biggest fan of this movie, but as an animation fan and Don Bluth fan, I'll definitely pick it up...for the right price!

I love how a movie that had a preview trailer on the Batman: Mask of the Phantasm tape can come out before Batman: Mask of the Phantasm when the Batman franchise has made well over $1 billion is the last six years.

Daughters watched this on NetFlix a few weeks back and seemed to like it. I agree on Don Bluth but I will always remember him for Dragon's Lair and Space Ace .

I just found Space Ace and Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp on DVD unopened at my local thrift store for $3 each. I haven't watched/played them yet (they're kind of half movie, half game, I guess) but as a Bluth fan they are welcome in my animation collection.

From where? He was always that creepy, we just didn't notice at first.
(Praising "Land Before Time" and "Secret of NIMH" was all very well when all Disney was making was The Black Cauldron and Oliver & Company, but it was a little different in the 90's when this came out...)

Besides, it's just Fox--They only have a limited amount of "Kids & Family Titles" catalogue.
Easter just means another excuse to put FernGully back on the shelves (same day), but now they sort of lump them all together in the same package.

I posted this in the Hot Deals section already, but I thought I'd ad it here too...

FernGully: The Last Rainforest and Thumbelina will be released on Blu-ray tomorrow 3/6/12 and are available for pre-order on JR.com for $9.99 each.

You'll have to order something for $5.01 or more to get free shipping (over $25), but I thought this was a pretty good deal for these two. They are both currently $15.99 at Amazon and if past releases are any indicator, this might be the cheapest they are for a while. The Secret of NIMH and All Dogs Go to Heaven were both released almost a year ago and have only ever dropped to $9.99 and $8.99 respectively.

EDIT: My post originally had links but for some reason they aren't working correctly, so I removed them. You should be able to find these 2 at JR.com by searching.

Oh, my! I had no idea this was going to be released on Blu-ray! if there's anyone who bought it, can you please share some photos of the packaging? I'm really curious to see if there's a new restoration

Not sure what you mean but I can't take photos. The packaging is normal MGM stuff (eco-cases I think they're called).

I never saw this before, so I don't own the dvd and can't compare, but I highly doubt this to be a re-master. When it comes to catalog titles (animated or not), MGM always seems to just use the latest available master, which is usually fine.

This one has its share of dirt and specks. Otherwise I guess it looks as good as it can (this was shot on film the old-school way).

It's letterboxed to 1.85, and there are a ton of audio tracks, seemingly covering all European countries.

Could you please specify all the languages on the disc? Please 20th Century Fox always lies about the specifications in all of Europe, only giving the language spoken in the country of release to limit import.

Brazil Thumbelina in Portuguese 5.1

Hi there folks!

I've bought the Thumbelina Blu-ray. And I'ved already the DVD R2 With Portuguese (Brazilian) Audio.

But I didn't like the quality of the video of the blu-ray. And the PT audio was only 2.0.

So... I have remastered that bluray, cleaning some image problems. And I've remaster the audio to 5.1 using all 5.1 audios of other languages to help in the job.

And now I've a version just for me and my family

When we love, we work hard. "And nothing is impossible!" (Like ja****o says)

I forgot Thumbelina came out, I might have to give it a rewatch. It's been years since I've seen it, but I remember it being okay. Definitely not the worst Bluth has ever done. After having rewatched a lot of his stuff, I can't get over how much I disliked The Pebble and the Penguin and A Troll in Central Park. Granted that last one might have just been aimed way too young, but it was still pretty awful.

Question - I've noticed this is among many Region 1/Region A titles to bear this message on Amazon:
Quote:
Region 25509 encoding. (This DVD will not play on most DVD players sold in the US or Canada [Region 1]. This item requires a region specific or multi-region DVD player and compatible TV. More about DVD formats)
Why does this message keep popping up on SO MANY titles that ARE Region 1/Region A/all-region titles? It's kind of confusing, because the product details will say it's R1/RA/R0, but that message is up there. I know that it's likely not true, but a lot of people might be turned off from buying it on Amazon because they don't understand it.
