The Keepers is a 7-episode American documentary web series that was released on Netflix on May 19, 2017

The series explores the unsolved murder of the nun Sister Cathy Cesnik who taught English and drama at Archbishop Keough High School, and how her former students believe that there was a cover up by authorities after Cesnik suspected that the priest at the school, A. Joseph Maskell, was guilty of sexual abuse.

According to The Guardian
Quote:
Where other true crime hits have followed a linear chronology, The Keepers hops between 1969, the 1990s and today, striking a fine balance between narrative structure – a wow moment at the end of every episode – and respect for a subject that doesn’t need or deserve sensationalism.

Wife and I finished it this weekend. I liked it, she loved it. Fair warning, it is brutally depressing.

Watched 3 eps. so far. It's a pretty compelling, and well-produced series so far, though I do find the subject matter is difficult to comfortably sit through. Certainly worth checking out, especially if you liked documentary series like Making a Murderer, or OJ Simpson: Made in America (though those are better than this one in my opinion). I'll finish it up by the end of the week, and probably post my complete impressions.

I finished all episodes.

How did we get to this point? It seems so many essential positions in our society, positions that were created to look out for the people, positions in various levels government and religious organizations, have been filled with people who do not care about the interests of the people they are supposed to be serving. Those positions have been mutated to serve those few with money and power. Everything is about money and how to get more of it for themselves and less for everyone else. When will people learn those actions have so many consequences and harm the entire world around you. The world is whatever we make it. What are you making it?

All those lives forever changed and it could have been stopped before it ever happened.

Recently saw all 7 episodes of The Keepers on Netflix. Wow. Very compelling, meticulously researched, extremely disturbing, and at times stomach-turning true crime documentary series. I actually found this far more intense (though not necessarily "better") than Netflix's "Making a Murderer" - though that was an excellent doc. as well.

There's is a lot going on here, including an unsolved murder; horrible crimes against children at C. school(s); repressed memories; etc.

I think a lot of people that act deeply religious on the surface are in fact sick pieces of trash (as was seen in this doc.), and they're using their religion as a "smoke screen" to disguise/conceal their horrific behavior. That's why I never have & never will trust most "deeply" religious people. Thankfully I wasn't raised Catholic, and actually wasn't raised in a religious family.

I find the abuse that happened here horrific. It's been well documented over the years that the CC will cover up these types of crimes. The nuns who taught at the school were probably too afraid of the priest to say anything. And, they were justifiably afraid - given the fact that Sister Cathy's murder was almost certainly committed by someone she knew (and was going to expose).

The parents of the girls were probably too enamored of the CC that they wouldn't have believed the girls if they knew what was going on - and even if they suspected something, they probably looked the other way. That being said, the one male that was interviewed (who was abused by the priest as a boy) did say his mother went to the school & complained about the priest, which resulted in the priest's being moved to another school - like that was any kind of punishment. This P.O.S. should have been sent to jail and done hard time. The death penalty would have been fitting for this sorry piece of excrement!

Again, if the climate at the CC were had been more open to exposing these scum-bags instead of trying to protect them, Sister Cathy would have felt more comfortable going to the church authorities & exposing the priest. As it stood, she got all but kicked out of the school after confronting the priest (she had to go teach at a non-religious school the Fall after the girl told her what had happened), and was killed prior to exposing this P.O.S.

Re: the letter that was mailed to the sister & the one she gave to the authorities before opening (that was promptly "lost"), we will probably never know the contents. We also don't know either way if Sister Cathy was pregnant.

We don't know for sure whether Sister Cathy did indeed buy her sister an engagement present; this is all speculative.

I do believe Sister Cathy was killed because she was getting close to exposing the truth about the priest. I don't necessarily think the priest committed the crime himself, but I do think he had others do to this for him (as was strongly suggested in the doc.).

I do definitely believe the priest had a lot of incriminating material in the boxes he was burying in the graveyard. I also think the city authorities found this, but were covering up for him.

The series definitely poses more questions than answers, and it truly is heartbreaking at times. It's upsetting, but sadly unsurprising that the whole situation was handled so badly by officials, and the church. I'm probably being naive, but I do have hope that the doc will bring progress, and further truth to the case, as well as some form of closure for those needing it.

To add to my last post:

1) Who was the mysterious "Skippy"? He was the friend of one of the alleged participants. And, did he dress up as a nun & try to run someone off the road, as she attested happened? If so, was it to get rid of her, given that she was a possible witness? And, is Skippy still alive?!

2) At this point, only one of the alleged participants in the crime are still alive (that we know about), i.e. the elderly man living in the room with all of the stuffed animals/dolls (weird!!). It appears that he knows more than he's telling. However, if so, what is he hiding?! Did he have anything to do with the crime?!

Agreed. I want to also say that I have incredible respect to those women (and men) who were willing to go "on screen" in this doc. and talk about the horrific things that had been done to them. Obviously, most people wouldn't be willing to do this. However, I suspect it may have been a form of catharsis for them - i.e., to finally have everything out in the open & to be able to publicly accuse those who had done this - even if they were dead.

It's too bad the scum-bag priest died years ago. It would have been nice if he had still been around, and finally brought to trial for his horrible crimes.....or, at the least, publicly embarrassed/shamed by the doc.

My wife and daughter have just finished watching this and have brought me up to speed on it.

Quite horrific really.

I can only echo the sentiments of rodneyfaile with regards to organisations and people in whom we place our trust only to have it abused. Do certain people enter into positions of authority and influence with the express intention of abusing that position or do they go in with good intentions at the start and end up letting such power go to their head?

It's disturbing to think that there are such manipulative characters in society who will meticulously build up a smokescreen of respectability in order to commit heinous crimes. We have seen it with the Jimmy Saville case, we have seen it with football coaches, we have seen it with religious organisations and childrens' homes. Very depressing.
