Default Spiderman 3 Quality?

So I bought a 46" Sharp Aquos 1080p along with a PS3 and a free OpenSeason/Spiderman3 yesterday.

The Open season movie looked really good on the TV, I noticed no banding of anykind. But the Spiderman3 is sharp but has horrible noise quality. I am sitting 10 feet back and can see alot of noise, especially when the scene is dark. This can't be right.

So I am figuring several things. Am I expecting too much from Blu ray quality? Did I get a bad Spiderman3 copy? Or is all Blu Ray movies this noisy. I know some of you guys have listed Spiderman3 as amongst the best Blu Ray qulaity so I will be very worried if this is the best Blu Ray quality.

Open season looked fanatastic but it is an animation so I cannot really tell, I will try and pick up another live action movie today and see what the deal is. I am sure that my tv and PS3 are both running at 1080p with an HDMI cable.

Should I pick up a better quality cable? My cable initially comes from the XBOX 360elite.

SP3 looks superb on my set, you might want to calibrate your set since it is new.

In the extras of Ratatouille there is a calibrator tool in the special features, if you don't have this movie you should pick it up it's amazing.

How do I calibrate it? It is set at 1080p. I was playing with contrast and whatnot and set Noise reduction to High, but that does not seem to do anything.

I am suspecting that it is the thin HDMI cable from the XboxElite? Maybe I should get better gold plated HDMI cable?

So I guess, Spiderman3 should not be Noisy? hmmmm...I will better tell later this afternoon after I pick up another BluRay movie.

But this movie is another Cartoon Animation. It seems like all the cartoon animation looks great. It is the live action film that I am having trouble with.

when i bought my tv from CC i got a free hdtv starter kit. I believe you can buy them for $14.99. It comes with a calibration DVD that not only calibrates your tv, but surround sound as well. Also comes with a microfiber cleaning cloth and some coupons. I'd recommend it. It'll tune your tv in perfectly

There was some grain present but you get that whenever no filtering is applied. I saw no noise besides a little grain in 3, the grain was present in 2 as well. I run a $20 24k 6ft Philips hdmi cable from walmart and have not had any problems.

That said, animated films like open season and any of the pixar movies will make any real film or HD cam movie pale in comparison. I would suggest you to try a few of these movies then you could make up your own mind. here are a few that most agree the PQ is good: any POTC movies, hellboy, Black hawk down, casino royale, underworld, memoirs of a geisha, curse of the golden flower, The Day After Tomorrow, Fantastic 4: rise of the silver surfer, The Prestige, Apocalypto, Halloween, Crank, Transporter. All those movies are good, even though some may rank lower on the tier thread at the other forum, but understand that thread is only an IMO thread so the "opinions are like *******s, everybody has one" applies to it.

thanks
anthony

wow! this title is a litle bit missleading to me, "horrible" is the wrong word! in fact spiderman 3 has superb reference PQ!

Hmm i cant understand why it has a "horrible" PQ on your setup, thats really strange! On my setup its has reference PQ.

All three Spidey films look great. So did Hitchhiker's Guide, which I just finished watching. And Ratatouille and Cars. And Alexander: Revisited. I have yet to see a bad BD on my TV, and I've spent most of this holiday weekend watching BD movie after BD movie, attempting to catch up with all that I've bought.

Check your sharpness also. This is an awesome transfer.

heh

NO, Blu-rays are not noisier as you can see on Open Range (use logic)

Is everyobody that doesn't know about photography, or film (you've never seen a real photograph enlarged??) going to think grain is bad and noise??? Say goodbye to Cinema from the 20th century. Forget about it. Never watch it. Only watch CGI movies and games (from your xbox?). It's gonna be your best bet.

its a great transfer, but i suspect what you call noise is actually film grain. this is somthing you will have to get used to. Film grain on dvd kind of got filtered as due to low resolution dvd just smudge the film grain.

with Hi Def film grain can be displayed accurately, ie to the directers intent, so now one will find it restored in most hi def movie releases over the SD DVD counterpart.

wait until you watch the 300, now thats film grain albeit artificial.

obviously animation wont show film grain, so it looks uber clean.

Oh and Spidey looked pretty good in the grain department. I next recommend you watch X-Men III (one of my favorite film transfers) so you know how good grain looks

Mass Effect actually has an intentional "grain filter" to make it look like an 80's Sci-Fi flick
