Default Raiders of the Lost Ark in Black and White

Steven Soderbergh has created a "stripped down" version of Raiders of the Lost Ark to highlight the movie's cinematography and staging.

Yeah that's some excellent "lighting".

Probably my favorite quote from this piece:

Quote:
I’m just saying this is what I do when I try to learn about staging, and this filmmaker forgot more about staging by the time he made his first feature than I know to this day (for example, no matter how fast the cuts come, you always know exactly where you are—that’s high level visual math shit)
This definitely makes for a fascinating watch!

I'm fascinated by Soderbergh's cinematic revisionist/educator persona. Not only is it informative, but there's also a playful, subversive side to it that really appeals to me.

Raiders is a masterpiece--Soderbergh excises many of its trademark elements (the score, the soundtrack, the color) to redirect our attention and remind us exactly how brilliant it is. He creates a context that allows us to "see" the film for the first time again, to an extent.

I'd really like him to write a book or something. You know, when he's not busy directing acclaimed television shows and such.

Harrison Ford's intro scene looks so amazing in black-and-white.

Do any of you realize you can easily turn down the color on your TV and watch anything in black and white?

I've been doing that for years.

Having said that, Soderbergh's alternate music track is quite fun.

Yep, they even have this new technology called "subtitles" so you can still understand the dialogue. But you have to add your own music.

You can also shut off the TV and just listen to the soundtrack through your home theater speaker system. It's like radio plays all over again -- only in 5.1/7.1/Atmos!
