KuroControl is an excellent new program created by xsiv4ce at AVS Forums. He has posted it publicly for download here, along with a helpful thread. This thread is intended to be a FAQ of sorts, and help those on the forum who wish to take advantage of its many features, including ISF mode activation.
What is it? KuroControl is a program for Windows that sends commands to your Kuro through the serial or network interface. It allows you to enable, activate and adjust ISFccc modes (Day/Night/Auto) and full 9-point gamma on the Pioneer KRP and Signature Elites. It also allows you to save/load settings via XML file. What models does it work with? Currently, it works with the KRP-500/600M and Signature Elite 101/141FD. Wait, KRPs don't have ISF modes! Correct. American KRPs do not ship with ISF capability, but European KRPs do. They all use the same firmware but the NA models are crippled by a runtime check. KuroControl sends a command to the TV changing it to a European model, thereby allowing ISF to be enabled. Elite models can skip this step. How do I use the program? Download it, unzip it to a folder, connect your TV to a computer/network, and follow the steps found in the AVS thread. How do I connect my KRP/Elite to the network? KRP and Signature Elite monitors have built-in IP control. Use the network jack and a standard RJ-45 ethernet cable. You can connect in one of two ways: Computer---Router---TV or Computer---TV. If connecting directly to the TV, a crossover cable is required. My TV won't work over the network! This can be tricky if you've never done it before. Make sure your TCP/IP network properties are set correctly, especially if you're using the direct connection with a crossover cable. More information can be found here (thanks to jdbimmer). It's actually a good idea to get a program like KuroReader working properly before running KuroControl. What settings do I enter once I enable ISF? That's for you to decide. It's recommended to have your panel professionally calibrated or enter pre-existing settings for your specific model. Can I connect via serial port? Yes, but you won't be able to enable ISF modes. I'm confused about RGB/gamma values. How do I set them correctly? The numbers you see are the raw values returned by the Kuro. For the most part, 128 equals zero in ISF. 5 equals zero in the 9-point gamma, so adjust accordingly. For example, a sharpness value of -15 is set as 113 and a gamma of -1 is set as 4. Is there a Mac compatible version? No, but it might be created in the near future. Will KuroControl brick my KRP? No. Your TV will function exactly the same as before. As per my understanding, KuroControl does not flash or replace the current firmware, it simply sends commands to the TV. Will this void my warranty? This is a point of contention. Technically, yes it will. But so does the other method (ControlCal) for enabling ISF on the KRPs. If you need to get your monitor serviced, simply change your KRP back to the NA model. However, if you're really worried about this, don't use KuroControl. OK, I'm totally lost. What's ISF? ISF (Imaging Science Foundation) modes are only found on the highest-end plasma TVs. They allow for finer calibration and can provide a brighter, more vivid picture than Pure mode while maintaining the same accuracy. How do ISF modes work? Pioneer KRPs and Elites have 3 memory settings (Day/Night/Auto) for ISF on each input. Any or all 3 can be enabled to your liking. Unlike the standard picture modes, ISF memories are global so they don't change or reset with resolution or content. Also, they are non-adjustable via the TV menu. Once they are set, they are set in stone until you re-enter ISF mode with KuroControl. Last edited by Kurodude; 04-22-2010 at 01:18 AM. |
