I've tested on iPhone 4s running iOS 8 and it works. What device are you using? iPhone 6?

Update: Did you decline the apps request for permission to use the camera?
If so, the camera won't work and will be all black in the barcode scanner.

You can enable the camera again by doing this:
1. Go to your iPhone Settings
2. Scroll to bottom to the list of apps and find "My Movies"
3. In the "Privacy" view make sure you have enabled "Camera".
