According to Blurayfreak.com, Sony is stealing the web identity of another company to boost the traffic on the Blu-ray disc official web site.
![]() How wrong is it? Are they ready to do anything to win a bit of traffic? ![]() |

well, since the url wasn't registered, sony is well within their rights to do this. is it a form of squatting, yes. now, i just did a lookup on both of the names and they were registered in jan '06. did the merger occur later as mentioned in the article? i can't tell you. however, this is within anyones legal rights to do.
so no, they are not cheating. |

Do you seriously believe that a company like Sony would do something like this?
![]() The domains were registered using "Domains by Proxy" so the whois information is anonymous. All we know right now is that someone registered the domains and they are forwarding to the official BDA web site, why or by whom we have no idea so I think it's unfair to call out Sony before the facts are known. Anyone that wanted to could have registered the domains and then simply started forwarding them to blu-raydisc.com. |

thank you marwin
aside from the fact that it may not have been sony. it could be just some fan, unhappy client, or another member of the BDA as well |

You are right, nybody could have done it. But a company that does a press release saying that Sony did it, must have info we can't have.
Otherwise "they" are in deep trouble... |

hey, i have information that "ziggy" was the second gunman on the grassy knoll....
come on now. we aren't saying no one did it. what we're saying is that there is no proof to support that any even associated with the BDA did it. Last edited by theknub; 09-01-2006 at 06:53 AM. |

Who cares? Maybe they will make it a BD site and it is under construction - not finished yet?
I would do that ![]() |

It's more likely to be themselves rather than Sony... who has ever heard about the company "Base of the Bridge Technology"? Right, me neither, but now we have. Smart(?) move by a small, unimportant company... :P
I would say it could be anybody BUT Sony. |

Does it really matter that much who is forwarding it as they are choosing to do so.

I would call this one of the lamest pieces of news that I have ever heard in my life. Any company that has a registered trademark name PRIOR to the ownership of the URL has the right to that URL name. It is some paperwork that they must go through to get it, but they can do it. Sure, some headaches may be involved, but it is easy enough to do - and basically costs nothing. On the other hand, if someone got the URL before the name was announced, then it is crazy for that company to go with that name. Because the URL goes up in value a great deal and the company wanting the URL has ZERO rights to ever getting it. Even in court.
Altavista (remember them) spent $1,000,000 to acquire the www.altavista.com name after using a different URL for several years. Tivo was chosen as a brand name because it was easy to remember and the URL www.tivo.com was avaialble. Heck - I chose AV Integrated because www.avintegrated.com was available. This is petty at best. Whoever owns the URL (anyone figure that out yet?) either doesn't have the rights to it, or they do. If they do NOT then someone will get the URL back where it belongs if they have half a brain. If they do have the right to the URL, then they are doing what any smart business would do. Of course - Sony may not be involved with it at all. |
