Such a great film. It seems like only yesterday since I saw it on its first release on a Saturday morning in 1980 to a packed house, though it failed at the box office. Uniformly brilliant performances across the board, though I can't help but give a special mention to Rachel Roberts. So happy to be able to discard the DVD. Though I must admit I am purchasing the MoC version but cannot recommend this film highly enough.

To avoid confusion with the US and UK releases, keep in mind Universal (who TT got this from) released it in the former while United Artists (now MGM, who Eureka licensed it from in the UK) holds international rights for the latter.
Aside from the TT having the usual Isolated score and audio commentary with Chick Vennera/Julie Kirgo/Nick Redman vs Eureka's different commentary with John Schlesinger and the UK theatrical trailer, the transfers are totally different. The TT is an older Universal supplied master that opens with the Universal "An MCA Company" globe of the era and is in 1.85 AR, but sports more dirt/debris, EE, and a clumpier grain structure. The Eureka is a more recent MGM prepped HD master in 1.78 AR (not much different than 1.85:1) and opens with the CGI zooming MGM lion, which unfortunately replaces the United Artists "T" that opened the film in territories they released it in. However, it shows more info on all four sides in in most shots, plus looks cleaner with a more refined grain structure and is free of EE. |

I already picked up the Eureka simply because it was far less expensive to import that than to wait a year from now to pay $25 for the TT on sale.
Funny, but I assumed the Eureka was licensed from Universal as well, since in the past they've put out quite a few Uni titles. I would have preferred to have seen the globe and MCA tag opening the film, but not enough to pay the higher price for a lesser quality product. |

The UK release is gorgeous although I feel that it is a little biased to green. Overall though it has never looked better in any format including the original photo chemical release. A stunning movie.
