Default A Serious Man Discussion (Spoilers)

So how is this film? I'm thinking of picking it up today. I love the Coen Brothers work and I've heard some interesting things about this film.

The most interesting comment would be that this is exactly the type of film you make after you win an Oscar.

So what's your take on this movie?

I'm surprised I couldn't find a single thread about it.

Great movie, up there with the best of the year (unlike The Orphan, which is up there with the worst ).

Seriously Mike, awesome movie...and it has one of the greatest trailer's I've EVER seen.

That's the thing, the trailer really got to me. Plus on top of that I love dark comedies. I've heard though that this is darker than most get.

The ending was quite a shock i.e. surprised how sudden it was. Definitely in line with other Coen films. That's all I'll say since the OP obviously hasn't seen it yet.

I can deal with a downer or two. I mean a favorite of mine is still and always will be Happiness. I even loved Storytelling. Would this be along those lines?

The film really feels like a Coens' film , its funny, sad , annoying and weird. Its also I believe their most personal movie yet , dealing in faith, religion , superstition and fate.
A true classic Coens movie with an ending that leaves you agasp.

Thought it sucked. And I'm the Coens' biggest fan.

What was your reason for not liking it? I loved it a lot. I might even say it's one of my favorite Coens movies.

I only saw it once, and it's the kind of movie that probably requires being seen a few times to really get into it.

Based on the one time I saw it though, I didn't really like it. The Job aspect of it is interesting, but I found the characters a bit annoying, especially the main character, which kind of precludes enjoying the movie.

If you've seen Barton Fink and liked that, then you'll probably like A Serious Man. But I'd put it in my bottom 3 of enjoyability (with Burn After Reading being the worst). But then again, I might be odd, because my favorite Coen movie is The Hudsucker Proxy.

My wife and I just watched it (via Netflix) this evening. First thought after we finished it: "WTF was that?" Then, within 15 to 20 minutes, we wanted to watch it again. With just a few minutes of reflection we went from "huh?" to "we must own this movie!" This was the same reaction I had to "Barton Fink," "The Big Lebowski" and "No Country For Old Men." This is a great film. And, as always, beautifully shot by Roger Deakins.

Excellent. I thought my wife and I were the only people who loved that movie!

I didn't care for the acting, writing, story, characters, symbolism, soundtrack, portrayal of Judaism, use of stereotypes, the list goes on.

Why is it one of your favorite Coens? Their talents and gifts have been displayed far better elsewhere.

To each his own. I thought all of those elements were spot on.

I agree with you. Didīnt know it was a Coens Bros movie until after watching it.

I did however have a feeling that this was a cultural thing. Maybe this movie sits better with an american audience? PS: Iīm from Norway.

Saw Serious Man last night, and wow. It blew me away. It is funny, thought-provoking, touching and disturbing all at once. The ending tied my brain into such a knot that I burst out laughing.

One thing that really struck me was how well it brought the 60s to life, even though that wasn't the focus of the picture. I was only a small boy in that decade, but I was having flashbacks. Even the lighting and use of color was 60s-ish, like a well-preserved but noticeably old Kodachrome slide.

I woke up this morning thinking about it. That is a sure sign of a movie that rates 90+ on the TigerMeter.
