Gouged In Canada - Blu-ray Forum

Been having E Mail wars with some of the mailorder sites in Canada. Been *****ing at them about the discrepency of price between U.S. and Canadian online sites, owned by the same company.

Spiderman BD Box set:

Amazon.com: $65.99USD + Free Shipping
Amazon. ca: $89.99CND + Shipping

Best Buy.com: $60.88USD + Free Shipping
Best Buy.ca: $65.99CND + Shipping
Future Shops.ca $69.99CND + Shipping (Owned ny Best Buy.ca)

Then there is the 6 cent premium for Canadian Dollars + 14% Canadian sales tax, as opposed to 7% New York State Sales tax.

Getting sick of getting gouged!

No sh*t, I feel so sad to live in Canada. Even Canadian money is good now doesnt make any different, cuz everything here is like almost import from USA. I mean BD's or games.

Just order from Amazon.com! I do it all of the time. You pay for shipping, but there is no tax and the price difference makes up for that shipping charge! On 3-5 titles you can save up to $50. And, since the Canadian Dollar is up right now, your credit card company will convert to give you that little extra per dollar (of course they also charge you something like 2% of the purchase for that conversion, so it more of less balances our exchange advantage).

I order from Amazon and ship it to Singapore which ends up being a few dollars cheaper then buying locally which go from about US$37 and up. If the Sing$ keeps getting stronger, then it will be even cheaper for me.

But from a former Canadian... I feel your pain as well, no cheap alternative out here at the moment

DVDPacific.com charge much less for shipping. They often offer good prices on their products.

here in Edmonton, Alberta, London Drugs has the Spiderman BD Box Set for $67.99 + 6% tax

But I know what you mean by us getting gouged here in Canada. I believe that there is some guy in government (can't remember who he was, my dad was telling me this the other day(I am only 18 so living with parents

)) that is trying to fix this retail over pricing thing.

Almost all the movies I order are from Amazon.com, Best Buy and Futureshop have ridiculous prices, as does walmart. The only time I'll buy it directly from the store is if I can't go on without it in my posession.

I was suprised to see Call of Duty 4 is $59.99 on both Amazon.com and .ca. Futureshop wants 64.99 so f**k them. I'll be ordering from .ca this time.

HAHAHAHA... I made about 7 searches for titles that I was curious about and then searched just for "blu-ray". The ONLY search result I got was for "blu-ray" and it only turned up 8 titles. Sorry about that. I don't find their site very well designed as I could not find an option to list all of the BD titles.

It is getting ridiculous. Our dollar is worth nearly $1.05 U.S.

Given the average difference in prices, it's like we are paying 30% extra for living in the Great White North.

there's also postal outlets that will let you send your packages to them (not po box) for $2 a package on average, only its just sooooooo annoying heading over the border with the customs agents on both sides. there's a couple reasons why the prices in stores don't reflect the dollar yet:
1) even though right now we're at 1.05 alot of the stuff on the shelves were purchased while the dollar was at 0.95 (for example). the dollar is gaining strength faster than retailers need to re-stock their shelves at changed exchange rates.
2) made-in-canada products won't drop in price, there's no exchange rate when a car/magazine/CD/etc made in canada gets sold in canada. this means those products will actually get more expensive when sold in the US.
3) it costs more to ship stuff here than the US (for some reason i'm not aware of) which means the additional cost will get passed on to us.

with that said, free-trade and supply & demand is kicking in. zellers is matching US prices where they can, walmart is matching US prices on magazines/video games/etc, retailers are trying to get better deals out of their suppliers, lower prices are coming.

but for now just buy from amazon.com. BD's are generally $5-10 cheaper and have no GST (or PST if you're unlucky enough to have that).
general rules for canadians buying from amazon.com to make it worth it:
1) buy multiple discs per order, this minimizes the shipping charges (buying 6 BD's individually will cost $48 in S&H, but $23 S&H when bundled together)
2) the price on amazon.com should be about $3-4 cheaper than what you can find here to make the price "break even". every dollar cheaper after that is savings. all you have to do is be patient, it will take time to ship.
