Wow. Such an amazing love letter to traditionnal hand drown animation.. reminds me of some of the little gems I have seen over the years at the Annecy Animation film festival...
I fear that apparently lacking flashy CGI and SFX, and not being apparently very kid friendly, it will not really be a big drawn to theaters, but in any case it should be a great Blu-Ray when it releases ![]() Anyone knows why Disney isn't actually distributing/ marketing it? They don't seem as invested with taking on Ghibli films like they used to, after letting Poppy Hill go. Only reason they took on The Wind Rises because it was hailed as Miyazaki's last film. With the animation on this one, I'd imagine they see it as hard to market, and thus with an easy to predict low box office, it's not a worth while investment for Disney.

Part of what I miss about living in Tampa is that it was a big enough city where limited releases would be playing in at least one of it's many theaters. Now I have to cross my fingers and pray that the AMC and Tally will show it. |

With GKIDS's roadshow distribution, the number of theaters will be limited and certain cities/theaters will get the film before other cities/theaters over a period of two or three months or so. So the release wouldn't be wide enough to do a TV campaign like The Wind Rises. That said, looking forward to see how Studio Ghibli's third English dub turns out. Although GKIDS does produce dubs such as Ernest & Celestine, Studio Ghibli has been producing the English dubs to their films (with frequent dub producer Frank Marshall) since Poppy Hill. If any of the theaters in your area played Poppy Hill, Ernest & Celestine, A Cat In Paris, Chico & Rita, or The Secret of Kells, there's probably a pretty good chance they'll get Kaguya. Fortunately, a couple of theaters in my area have gotten at least a couple of these, though a lot of them never lasted long enough for me to catch them in theaters... |

If you have a theater nearby that shows art films or independent films but hasn't shown a GKIDS distributed film, I suggest letting the theater know that you are interested in seeing Kaguya. |

The Tale of Princess Kaguya is now available to preorder from Amazon USA!
Looks like it may also be the first Studio Ghibli film in the US to have a digital copy included with Ultraviolet. Although Cinedigm is the distributor for GKids, it does seem that Universal handles distribution for Cinedigm similar to how Anchor Bay's distribution is handled by Fox. No release date has been set. Also, it seems that the Kingdom of Dreams and Madness will at least be available thru digital distribution in the US, as Amazon Instant Video has a SD preorder with a release date of December 9, 2014. Update: GKids confirms on Twitter that no digital/UV copy will be included with Kaguya, and that the release is still being finalized. Last edited by disneywildcat; 11-15-2014 at 12:47 PM. |
