Default Question about Animé

Does anybody have any idea as to when and/or if Anime or "JapanAnime" is coming out on Blu-ray? Since this format is backed by Sony, which is ultimately born/raised in Japan I'd just assumed: "Someday". For starters, Princess Mononoke, was always a favorite of mine, as the animation is absolutely amazing. Japan definately knows how to draw, best artists in my book. I also greatly enjoy Akira, Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter, Vampire Hunter D, and Ghost in the Shell.

There are quite a few Animes out on Blu ray now and down the line.
Here is a nice list of Anime out now and currently coming out: http://www.animeondvd.com/forum/show...php?tid/18821/

*Note: SOS should be coming out in America. Yukikaze has been confirmed to have english sub and dub so a US release should be coming down the road.

Default Thank You

You provide hope for me yet. I'll import them if I have to. Preferably an American [U.S.] release though. I love watching and listening to these movies in Japanese [with english subtitles] Sharpens one's skills.

My main problem with the U.S. Blu-Ray releases is that the main company providing them is Bandai Visual. One quick look at their prices pretty much says it all.

I am looking forward to Paprika next month, however.

Remember all Japanese BD are the same region as USA.
In fact Ghost in the Shell the movie is a Japanese release with both English Subs and Dubs, as well as Japanese. Unfortunately the import I found was about $90! Can't afford it yet... but maybe someday i will.

Not necessarily. Bandai Entertainment (different company from Bandai Visual) has the rights for the DVDs, so they may actually be the ones responsible for any potential BD release as well. Just because a disc has English subs/dubs doesn't mean that it'll be released outside Japan. BV may just be adding it in order to help boost their domestic sales to importers.

Metropolis and Memories also have no subs. They were originally solicited as having them, but it got removed later, presumably because Sony has the rights in the US and don't want them to impact sales.

Anime fans will hate me for saying this, but they'll forgive me eventually. I have to vent.

I'm getting so disgusted with the anime art style and themes. It's been there since the 80's until now, and please - NO MORE....

Big eyes, pointy nose and chins, edgy....ugh....UGH....

I feel about it almost the same way people feel about the fighting genre in video games....every new fighter comes along with more flash and flair, but they've always felt that -- been there, done that.

Any anime that Sony USA has a rights to, the Japanese blu-ray will most likely not have subs or dubs on them. But when Sony gets around to releasing the anime they bought rights to on blu-ray, it'll definitely be at a lower price point.

I believe they have rights to Metropolis, Steamboy and Paprika.

Cool, thanks for the list link. I cannot wait for the Karas series to blu. Starz Media is blu exclusive and apparently owns or has a major stake in Manga so I am sure some more titles will begin flowing once they are sure it will sell well. As far as what you said Secret, I feel the same to some extent, but mainly with the lots of recycled titles and themes, I know Gundam is popular but for all thats holy how many times can you cut up its past rebirths and vomit out a new one. I have become very picky in what I buy such as Ergo Proxy. Hope to see some series brought to blu, love to see Last Exile.

Funimation is Blu too, and they have a LOT of licenses. Theyve only announced that DBZ movie set so far, so I'm guessing they are waiting to see how that one sells before they announce anymore? I dont even care for DBZ, but I'll buy it to support sales.

A couple old titles from them I would love to see, as well as a couple new. I watch the 'HD' fansubs of Darker Than Black, so thats a fantastic candidate.

I'm not really convinced of the PQ quality of anime ... since it's 2D all the way (except those who are full digital, and those are poor in emotion I think), I'll miss the richness of screen depth Blu-ray gives.

Don't knock it until you've seen it. Anime does benefit from HD, both in line work and in detail.

I'll second this. One only needs to watch the "Ultimate Avengers" and "Doctor Strange" Blu-Ray releases to see that even general animation benefits from HD transfers.
