I'm surprised the cover is so different to the US cover:

Can anyone see a 4K release if this does well come awards season? I just think the shots of the Irish countryside are too gorgeous to deny us a 4K release.

Thank goodness! Was worried it’d be a DVD only job. Very happy, will definitely get this at some point.

Looks like it’ll be in a slim keepcase like Nightmare Alley was (which I recently got a copy of too, and am grateful Disney bothered tbh…still don’t get why they skipped The French Dispatch altogether here, but I guess Criterion will get to it eventually).

UK sometimes gets some of the worst covers from studios unfortunately. They're often filled with stars, and raves

Like these two other eyesores

It's funny these two films were chosen. I really enjoyed The Northman and purchased it on UHD. Men on the other hand bored me greatly when I saw it in the theater. No desire to watch it again.

The irony being that the people they're trying to attract with these star ratings, give zero f*cks about buying BDs.

It gets truly annoying when it spoils some great cover art. Mubi does it a lot, and on both slipcover and "regular" cover - which is pretty stupid.

Genuinely shocked Disney are putting this out on disc. Day 1 purchase for me despite their horrible new slim cases. Still waiting for The French Dispatch 😕

Wait, are Disney UK using skin cases now like the ones you see in America/Italy etc?

And it’s based on the very dated idea of people browsing discs in a shop and reading the blurb on the sleeve.

All ways worth a wait. I'm not 100% sure but vaguely recally trhat 3 Billboards only got 4K disc here in UK because it won lots of unexpected awards

This needs a 4k release. Lots of dark scenes that will probably look terribly compressed with banding on Blu-ray.

The only way it will get a 4k release is if like 3 Billboards, it wins awards.

Not just here: the whole of Europe. The only physical releases are the US, Japan and Oz. It's one thing - and in the case of Paramount issues, say, quite usual - for there to be German/French/Italian/Scandinavian releases bypassing the UK altogether; but for there to be no European release at all is highly odd. As for waiting for the Criterion, how long do you plan on living? There's still no sign of Fox's Isle of Dogs, and that's now pushing five years' old...

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was a 2017 film from Fox, though. Fox were the main proponent of 4K UHD, so at the time, it made sense that they would do a 4K UHD release for that film, particularly once it became a favorite for major Oscars.

I think a 4K UHD release is highly doubtful, sadly. Remember that Searchlight also had Nomadland, which actually went on to win Best Picture last year, and even after that, Disney didn't give it a 4K UHD upgrade. In fact, I think even a Blu-ray release was up in the air until the Oscar nominations came out.

On the other hand, The Banshees of Inisherin is being released on Blu-ray months before the Oscars ceremony and at least in the US, weeks before the Oscar nominations are announced. In the unbelievably unlikely scenario that the film runs the table and wins every major Oscar, perhaps Disney will reconsider, but even then, I suspect they will need serious convincing to produce a new 4K UHD disc with the Blu-ray already out.

Rough gap between initial studio release and Criterion edition:

Fantastic Mr Fox - 4 years
Moonrise Kingdom - 3 years
The Grand Budapest Hotel - 6 years

Isle of Dogs came out just over 4 years ago, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it in a Criterion lineup in the next year or two. Unless something has changed - and unless I'm mistaken - word is Wes Anderson has an eventual Criterion release written into his contract when he makes a new film at this point.

Anyway, I suppose I could always import the US disc of The French Dispatch if it doesn't look like a Criterion edition is appearing. But funnily enough, of all Wes Anderson titles, I feel like it's ideal for the Criterion treatment (a lot of it could be dissected more than the average Anderson film, and I'm sure there are plenty of outtakes/deleted scenes they could include too).

PS: the Paramount situation is indeed frustrating, but the recent rumours are that Arrow have signed a new studio deal and it could well be them, considering the number of unreleased Paramount titles on HD in the UK.

Just watched the film on Disney+, highly recommended and quite funny and tragic all at the same time.

I didn't fall asleep but I was disappointed. It felt very much like one of McDonagh's early plays with a few scenic shots thrown in to make it somewhat cinematic.

Glad it's getting a release on blu - good to see Disney are still willing to release grown up fare on physical media.
