Unhappy Samsung bailing on plasma, too

Well, if this is true, looks like that's it - plasma is officially cooked. Bummer.

Well shoot. I was really hoping to pick up an F8500 next summer once I had graduated but that looks like it'll be a lot harder now. I was hoping they'd continue production at the very least for a couple more years

Yeah, I'd imagine you'll still be able to find one, but I'm sure the price will be astronomical.

The situation will probably be the exact same as what's going on with the Panasonic ZT60 now..it's like $6000 on Amazon which I absolutely refuse to consider..I can get an great projector for that price.

Yep, that's exactly what will happen. $6k for that TV, as awesome as it is, is insane.

Man, what a shame.

I suppose I'm just going to hold off for an LG OLED then. Unless I wanted to charge the whole darn thing to my Amazon Store Card I don't see myself being able to buy the 65" F8500 in time for the price to still be where it is today .

So the only company making plasmas now is LG. After November 30th 2014 no more plasmas are being made from Samsung.

I've been considering buying one or two plasma tvs this year. I might go all out and get an F8500 since this is the end.

LG isn't likely to be making them much longer either.

According to another report today from Yonhap News Agency, "Industry watchers say LG Electronics Inc., South Korea's No. 2 tech giant, will also discontinue its PDP business in the near future, noting that it has already converted one of its PDP production lines to make solar batteries."

Not even a little surprising, it was only going to last another year or maybe two at most.

I called this was going to happen the second Samsung cancelled the H7000. I'm just surprised this is happening this soon (I expected this to happen in the fall).

I jumped on a 50" Panasonic s60 dec of last year for this reason. I hope it will last at least 6-10 years.

A lot of tvs on Amazon have idiotic prices, so some will pop up on ebay or elsewhere for way less than there. I don't know how sellers think they can get what they ask on Amazon. They're asking like $7k for supposedly unopened kuros, for example. Nobody is going to pay even much more than $2k in most cases. And Amazon Warehouse Deals sold some used Samsung oled sets for $2400 yet now keep trying to sell one for $6400.

My friend just bought and exchanged 3 samsung plasmas (2 different models) and they all had terrible dead on center buzz from even ten feet away! He then got a subpar LG plasma, took that back and found the same panasonic as me on on craigslist! SO not as sad to see them go as I would have been 2 months ago

*I mentioned this in another thread, and it seems like 60" samsung plasmas are the worst offenders

There will always be upgrades and those who have to have the latest and greatest. Least we forget those who have to keep up with the Jones etc.

I'm all for advancing technology etc. I just think that this is truly unnecessary on behalf of Samsung. Especially since their plasmas have cornered the market. Who wouldn't want a Samsung plasma over a LG?

Perhaps they made their money back off of plasma R&D and now want to make their money back on their newer line.

I recently saw one of their curved sets in best buy. It's hard to say if looks worthy of replacing the plasma because all of the other sets around it were dumbed down.

Looks like another great one has bit the dust and will go the route of the dinosaur. Perhaps Michael Bay will throw a few Panasonics and Samsungs in Transformers 10: The Age of Upgraditis is upon us!!!

Not really. They are a business after all and they have to make profit. The average consumers have so many misconceptions about plasma it isn't even funny. The moment they started pumping out cheaper LCD, it was over for PDP technology. People aren't rushing out to stores and buying up plasmas. I'm no economist, but we can all see that there aren't tons of profit to be made off PDPs. You can make better black levels, better color accuracy, yada yada, but you can't fix people's ignorance. Companies have to make that next big gimmick for you to upgrade what you have, so now they want to do stupid curve tvs and ultra mega hyper turbo resolution.

In the end, they can keep improving plasma tvs, but they can't change people's mindset.

I called it 10.31.13, the day Panasonic issued their press release.
