Hello all,
Thanks to this season's Black Friday Criterion sale at B&N, I have finally acquired the last of Akira Kurosawa's currently available Samurai Blu-rays. My final purchase, however, came from Amazon, and was not Criterion: 1985's Ran. I noticed there's no thread about it, so, let's talk about. I know Criterion lost their license to distribute the film in most territories right before their 2009 planned Blu-ray release; what a shame. Currently only Studio Canal's version is available and from what I can tell it isn't a very good one. I received mine yesterday and since it was missing the slipcover, it'll be going back. So I'd like to take this opportunity to discuss not only US's release, but also UK's, where Studio Canal released it in a very nice digibook packaging. Neither release has very good video ratings on the site but I was wondering if they are the same transfer, since the UK Blu-ray is Region A+B, I would much rather import the digibook than keep a regular ol blu-ray case on the shelf next to the rest of Mr. Kurosawa's Samurai Criterion Blu-rays. US release: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Ran-Blu-ray/4186/#Review UK release: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Ran-Blu-ray/5793/#Review I also noticed the US release is 1.82:1 whereas the original (and UK) releases are 1.85:1. |
