So, I've had an A/V receiver for years now, and I'm on my second one at the moment, and I've had some questions about how discs encoded in a mono format are output through the receiver.
My receiver does the decoding, and has done so for both of my receivers. My original receiver was an Onkyo TX-SR606. When listening to a DTS-HD MA mono disc, most notably The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, and others, I had to put the receiver in Direct Mode in order to have the receiver output sound ONLY from the center channel. With LPCM 1.0 movies, mainly Criterions, the receiver would say MULTICHANNEL in the front, but output sound from the center like it should. So, I had it all figured out... My new receiver, the modest Onkyo TX-SR333, does things a bit differently. I played an LPCM mono encoded Criterion disc and it played out of the front L & R speakers, and showed PCM 2.0 on the display on the receiver's front. The ONLY way to get these to play out of the center channel is to use the Dolby Pro Logic II setting. Now, for DTS-HD MA 1.0 sources, these play fine. WTF? Am I missing a setting or something?? |
