![]() Directed films only ![]() Tough, lean, economical, and colorful are just a few choice words for a guy who's been a pillar of American cinema for decades. Spawned from the macho lineage of guys like Raoul Walsh, John Ford, Howard Hawks, Don Siegel, Robert Aldrich, Jean-Pierre Melville and Sam Peckinpah, Hill made a profound impact on the action film and has been one of the few noteworthy filmmakers who has struggled to keep the western a viable genre. Hill's films are renowned for their spartan minimalism; tightly-composed, not a shot is wasted as terse dialogue and bursts of violence breathlessly propel the action forward. There have been smatterings of reappraisals of Hill's work, but we're really due for a full-blown revival of the guy who essentially invented the buddy cop genre as we know it, salvaged the Alien franchise, and gave pop culture "CAN YOU DIG IT?!" A true iconoclast, Hill made the movies that he wanted to make, and his pared-down genre tales of stoic men in a brutal, fantastical world evoked through the lost art of efficeintly telling a story have made him my #1 favorite filmmaker for years now. Great director, for sure.
I just want a remastered transfer of "Crossroads" with Ralph Macchio and Steve Vai and uncompressed audio on Blu-ray. I have been waiting for it since the inception of the format. It's such a good movie, and hugely influential to generations of guitar players, including myself: Here is my rendition of the winning guitar duel part: [Show spoiler] I watched this movie countless times when I was a child, but it's only available on bloody DVD. |

A worthy thread for a terrific director...but it is missing Hill's last film, THE ASSIGNMENT.

Streets of Fire is perhaps one of the most criminally overlooked and underrated movies in history. The whole film has such an energy to it.

It's been beat to death in the Kino thread, but I'm really hoping we get Extreme Prejudice on blu at some point this year.

![]() That was on the heels of my dad showing my brothers and I The Warriors. Movie nights were (and still are, when we get them) a special thing growing up, and my dad did right in showing us some of the stuff that he liked when he was younger. The Warriors rocked my f'n world; a group of guys battling their way back to their turf amidst a kaleidoscope of colorful street gangs was the coolest thing I had ever seen up until that point. I burned through video stores' copies every weekend until I received the VHS, with that awesomely iconic cover art, for Christmas. After I started consciously looking at the names behind the movies, Hill's dossier read like I was the primary audience. In a world drowned in big budget excess and pontificating, Hill's pared-back stories about professionalism, camaraderie and survival hit right on the sweet spot.
