I wish they would release this series on blu-Ray and give it a proper remaster. The DVDs sets are a travesty which I refuse to buy, what with the audio issues and all.

Really enjoyed the Tales from the Darkside show back in the '80's - though, at the time I saw very few episodes, since it used to be on very late at night on Network TV. For those who aren't familiar with this, note it was a horror/suspense anthology series like Twilight Zone & Night Gallery - i.e., each episode was a stand-alone story & had nothing to do with any of the other episodes.
The opening sequence was creepy & iconic: "Man lives in the sunlit world of what he believes to be reality..." My favorite episode would have to be the one where the guy moved into the apartment & was told by the landlady to never nail anything to the wall. Great episode, with a fantastic ending ![]() I've seen the entire series on DVD. Many of the episodes are quite creepy, though many are also cheesy. However, It's definitely one of the better horror anthology shows I've seen, & I would consider it classic at this point. The PQ on the DVD series sets is definitely quite "soft & fuzzy", but I believe much of this was because the show was filmed on video, like a lot of TV series from the '80's. Side-note: The aforementioned TFTDS film released around 1990 is also worth checking out, and is also set up like the show, i.e. 2-3 unrelated horror segments. I wouldn't mind seeing a definitive set with the series & the film on Blu - that being said, I'm not sure how much the PQ re: the TV series itself can be improved for a high-def release, considering how it was filmed. However, I'm sure the 1990 TFTD film would look great on Blu.. Last edited by AnamorphicWidescreen; 12-10-2014 at 12:59 PM. |

I agree that the PQ probably can't be improved much. My only gripe with the dvd sets is that they replaced all the original music, except the intro, with really bad new music as the rights the original scores could not be secured.
Not that the original scores were great pieces of music or anything but they were miles better than the new ones. I've heard comparisons and the new ones sound like someone just went to town with a Casio keyboard. Just awful |

If the original film elements existed it would be great if they could go back and do a STTNG type of resoration (plus having the original music), but doubt that'll ever happen. Heck, even if they would just do it for selected episodes (like a best of sort of deal) I'd buy it. BTW, preaty sure this was shot on 16mm, and transfered to video for editing like many shows of the era (1980's/early to mid 90's).

Could be right. I can tell though from seeing it that even in the crappy state it's in on dvd, it was shot on film not video (same goes for the 1980's Twilight Zone that also looks like absolute crap on dvd). I guess I assumed that Tales from the Darkside was shot on 16mm since it was a low budget syndicated show.

Yes, the '80's Twilight Zone & Tales from the Darkside are some of my favorite TV series ever, since I was watching these on TV during their original release. And, it's too bad that the PQ is so poor for these....I watched quite a bit of TV back in the '80's, but I guess I was so used to the P.O.S. CRT picture (didn't have cable), so this is what I expected when it came to the PQ for TV shows. How far we've come....

Well, at least the iconic opening intro. theme score was not replaced, since that's the music most people remember from the show anyway... Last edited by AnamorphicWidescreen; 12-11-2014 at 02:55 PM. |
