Default Sokurov's "Russian Ark" (2002) coming from Kino

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/column...ts/071013_1200

Quote:
First up, our friends at Kino Lorber tell us they’re hard at work on some great new Blu-ray and DVD titles for release through the end of this year, including a deluxe version of F.W. Murnau’s original Nosferatu (1922), as well as Orson Welles’ The Trial (1962) and Alexander Sokurov’s groundbreaking Russian Ark (2002)! For you New York-area readers, Russian Ark will also re-open theatrically on 9/6 as an exclusive engagement at the Film Forum in NYC prior to the BD/DVD release. For those of you who haven’t seen it, Russian Ark features one of the longest continuous shots in film history, was (at least at the time) the longest film ever created in single take, and was shot with some 2000 actors and 3 live orchestras using 33 rooms of The Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. It’s pretty amazing. In any case, all three titles are very welcome additions to the Blu-ray format

So the single shot is longer in this film than "Hunger"?

Nice, I was just wondering if this would be issued on blu-ray.

This was a phenomenal big-screen experience, I got really swept away by it. I haven't revisited it since, so I suspect the digital image quality may look dated or even primitive by today's standard--but the feat of staging something so intricate in one long take will always produce a jaw-dropping effect.

I thought it was interesting, but not the kind of film I'd watch multiple times. Still a great achievement though. With that said, I still might go see the theatrical release, as I think it's definitely the kind of film that benefits from a big immersive screen.

Yeah, the DVD looked like crap. Let's hope Kino was able to obtain a 4k scan of this film.

another studio canal collection title--The Trial--being issued by a studio other than Lionsgate. there sure do seem to be lots of exceptions to that agreement.
btw: I toured the Hermitage back when Russia was still the Soviet Union.

Russian Ark is a fascinating movie. The gimmick of the shooting style plays a part, but the movie will still work had it been created with a more conventional approach.

I might have to pull the trigger on this.

I guess it was impressively made but probably the signal most boring and patience-trying film I have seen. Could not imagine ever revisiting this.

This is currently $17.49 at B&N as part of their Art House sale. I doubt you'll find it cheaper:

Feel free to submit the price to Amazon too

That is the best price I have seen so I jumped on it and did a pre-order.

Same here. I thought that the Russian Ark film style was a cool gimmick, but the story did not draw me in all that much.

My eyes lit up at the mention of deluxe edition of Nosferatu in the first post, though.
