Default 3D Viewing Question...

First of, let me apologize if this is in the wrong area....

My question is this:

I just recently got a Sony 3D Blu-Ray/Surround Sound System.
I have a normal old 42", 1080p, 120hz LCD TV.
If I put a 3D disk in the player will the Image on my TV look distorted or will it Convert it to 2D?
Or is there a setting somewhere that does it?
Or is the Player going to know that it's not a 3D TV and ask if I want it displayed in 2D instead?

Thank you in advance...

Experience will vary from one player to another, one tv to another and one disk to another.

Maybe you can narrow it down by telling us which blu ray disk you're trying to watch. Unless of course you're asking in general with no particular movie in mind.

Usually, it just won't play the disc. Sorry.

You can actually buy something called a 3D Video Wizard and it does a pretty good job of much better anaglyph 3D presentations so you could then either try a conversion to 2D (which is not always as successful as a separate 2D disc) or watch in 3D. You could always tweak settings for a lone HDMI port. And it doesn't cost more than $35 or so on Amazon.

I was just asking in General.
Mostly because Predator 3D got a new better transfer, same as Jurassic Park, I just want to know if it'll look not distorted on my 3D Player with Non-3D TV.

If it will play with no distortion then I'll get them both...

Having a normal 2D HDTV, it should play normally if it allows 2D and 3D playback as with Dredd 3D. The resolution will be full, though some experts say there is a visual difference, which I haven't seen yet having had a 3DHDTV since 2011 or so.

Short answer, it should not look distorted at all in 2D on a 2DHDTV. Check your blu ray player and TV settings. It should have an option to have 3D ON/off. Usually, with a 2D TV, it'll say "3D not detected" if it can't play the disc.

I've tested this theory with a 2DHDTV with a PS3 blu ray 3D player update, and Resident Evil Afterlife 3D blu ray back in 2010, played perfectly in 2D.

Yes.
I was curious because both Jurassic Park and Predator got new remasters for their 3D releases.

I'd like to see the how they look, but as I don't and won't get a 3D TV, I wanted to know if they'd play in 2D.

I just tried G.I. Joe: Retaliation and is said cannot be played (I forgot I had the 3D Disk.

Jurassic Park 3D review here says it's 3D locked as well.
So that one is out.

I just need to find out about Predator.

Thank you everyone for all the speedy answers!

Usually all the 2d presentation is of a 3d films is the left or right image so it makes no difference. In some rare cases they films are actually different. The most notable example of this is Monster House which in 3d has essentially no DOF effect, whereas in 2d there is an extensive DOF effect present. Such instances are very rare though.

As for blu-rays you will find on shorter films the 2d and 3d will be on one disc whereas longer films will have a disc that will only work with a 3d setup and a separate 2d disc (there are of course some exceptions to this).

I read that effect is also in "Tangled". however in that one, the great DOF is in the 3D version, while the shallow DOF is in the 2D version.

Can someone tell me what the abbreviation "DOF" stands for? Sorry if it's obvious, I just can't think of it.

Question Can you watch a 3D Blu-ray on a 2D TV?

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but can a 3d blu ray be played on a non-3d tv and look right? In other words, I sure thought that I had read somewhere that if you play a 3d BR and the tv is not 3d-capable, it will play the movie as if it were a 2d movie. But then recently it seems like someone said that's not the case.

I'm asking because I have an elite 101fd and an oled and not sure which I am keeping and I don't want to buy a 3d version of a movie only to then keep the kuro and have the movie not play.

Normally a BD 3D will not play at all if there is a non-3D-capable device in the setup.

Most 3d releases also come with a 2d option. Just make sure you get a copy that can do both or has both a 2d and 3d disc.

Surely the first question that should be asked is why are you buying 3D versions of films for a 2D set? Not only are you not sure if you can play it but a 3D copy is far more expensive.

Maybe the OP is planning to get a 3D TV down the line and doesn't want to double dip.

Really depends on the movie. Star Trek for instance, will say you need a 3d TV but Shrek will play just fine, as will Dredd and others.
