Default Does Blu-ray make the movie better?

This is completely subjective, but I got in an argument with my girl about watching Close Encounters on DVD vs. BLu-ray. I felt that the Blu-ray edition just made the movie better. I appreciated it more.

I'm not asking if it makes the experience better because that's a given. I wanna know if you think it makes the movie better.

Posting poll...

I've picked up titles on Blu-Ray and enjoyed them that I mightve never picked up on DVD; Blade Runner, 3:10 to Yuma, Sunshine.

BR makes all movies better in terms of the experience. 3:10 to Yuma on BR is awesome because you see and hear things the way they were meant to be. It would not be the same on DVD. However, it is the same story either way so what makes it better is the sensory experience- the stunning PQ, the incredible sound- the things you can only get on BR.

Yeah, I'd say so... usually in comparison, because the Blu' version has smoother edges, no ringing or cross-hatching... better color over all, detail is higher... yeah I'd say it makes it better. I usually find even regular DD and DTS sound a bit better than on the standard discs and although I thought this was just wishful thinking, the DTS and DD websites confirm that because Blu-Ray enables the higher bitrate sound quality, it also enables a higher bitrate on regular DD & DTS.

Blu-ray doesn't make the movie better, it makes it as it should be.

yeah I've realized. It only seems better because the experience is so heightened.

a bad movie in 1080p is still a bad movie, but will look and sound better.

a good movie in 1080p with lossless audio is better than it would be on standard DVD which is better than VHS which is better than analog broadcast.

That reminds me...I found an old VCR in my attic the other day, wasn't sure if it still worked...it just happened to have Miracle on 34th street in it (one of my favorite christmas movies ever) I hooked it up to my XBR4....and was very stunned at how hideous the picture was!....granted I was using A/V cables...but still...pretty bad!

The experience is better, but the movie doesn't get any better.

Their should be anther option ie..."it makes the movie clearer with incredible detail". I prefer eye candy which is Blu-ray over eye sore which is many DVD's not all.

Yeah, because if you connect your VCR with gold Component Video cables, it'll blow your socks off..... On a 50+ inch screen, you can probably count the pixels to determine the resolution you're getting!!!!

My point. Many movies that I didn't have chance to enjoy in theater, but w/ BD, I can enjoy them now.

And for many movies, the theaterical cut is so so, but the director's cut is good and only available on DVD/BD.

So, BD DOES make some movies better.
