Default 50 GB Discs...Coming to HD Enthusiasts soon...

Here's some good news...

http://www.cio.com/blog_view.html?CID=23999

Looks like we now have 50 GB discs coming from Panny, Sony, and others now. I think this is a good indicator of 50GB movies to come.

I don't see any mention whatsoever in regards to prerecorded material from movie studios, but at least we're starting to see things like these finally show up.

Good news indeed but there's a little problem, when it does come out it will be around $50..hope blu-ray catch on fast enough that it will eventually go down like DVD when it first came out.

Not really a problem when one considers that the discs and/or players are similarly priced to CDs and DVDs when they were first released. It is simply a realistic price point given that we are in an early adoption market.

I, too wish for it to go down, and don't doubt it will...in time.

I predict that these 50GB disc will be affordable in mid 08.

07 will be the year when blu-ray is out in full force (PS3, Movies, etc) but still remain fairly expensive (blu ray player/recorder at 400 and 50GB disc at 25 dollar). I still remember the days when I was playing 5 buck per 4.7GB APPLE DVD-R. I can't wait for the 100GB disc, I wanna backup my entire HD.

TDK claims that the discs can last more than 50 years and have no performance degradation after being overwritten 10,000 times.

Isn't that great! I saw this the other day and was extremely pleased. Especially since we have found out that some DVDs degrrade in as little time as 18 months. Actually, I had a DVD degrade on me within 6 months!

I had a few early gen DVD's do it to me as well. I also had a PS2 literally burn a few discs with its laser. What a terrible DVD player the PS2 was/is.

I REALLY hope the PS3 is a better BD player than the PS2 is/was for DVD.

Good news.

50GB BD-R is under $34

50GB BD-RE is just under $60

$25--50GB BD-Rs should be before March '07 at this rate!
