Sans Soleil by Chris Marker.

I've seen this film about ten times now and I'm still no closer to unlocking the door to its secrets than I was the first time I watched it. It's that type of film. And yet there's something there that's truly magical in a way that I can't fully describe. Every time I watch I try desperately to maintain absolute concentration throughout--to focus on every word, every image, every sonic nuance that teases me with some elusive forum of meaning. And every time I find myself lulled into an insidious trance that propels me into some sort of philosophical dream state. It's mystifying and metaphysical in a way that no other film I've ever seen has come close to matching.

What it is about?

...I don't really know.

Maybe nothing.

...maybe everything.

An abstract examination of the connection between time and memory and human existence. Or at least that's what I tell myself late at night when I'm pretending as though I really understand it...even a small piece of it.

It's not a documentary.

...but it's not fiction either.

But what it is?

The answers lie somewhere deep in a netherworld of cinematic exploration.

I do not expect everyone who sees it to like it. Far from it. Most people will probably hate it. But those for brave souls willing to pass through the gateway of the manifold secrets...something lies at the other side of perception that will change you forever.

...and I have no idea what that is.
