Default PS3, Upconversion and Blu-Ray

I have been going back and forth between (don't flame me) HD-A2 and PS3. I don't watch many movies or play many games (only sports), but when I watch movies I want them to be in HD. I will end up buying the PS3, but I was wondering about its upconversion of SD movies? How well does it do?? Blu-Ray compared to HD-DVD for a 720p Panny 50". I sit 8-9 feet from TV. Will I be happy with BR at 1080p over HD-DVD 720p (HD-A2)?

It does a great job of upscaling.

Probably the best. There will be some videophile that may state otherwise, but at a minimum, the PS3 is up there. Plus, it will receive the best support for firmware upgrades to improve its abilities.

Once you see blu-ray, you will probably forsake upconversion.

PS3 does a very excellent job rendering upscaled PQ....you won't regret it for a minute...listen and hear what PS3 owners say about it....

The PS3 seems like the best deal for the price, especially the 40gb since I don't have PS2 games. I get a BR player, ability to play games and upconversion for $399. An HD-A2 is just a HD-DVD player and upconversion for $200. Also, it is basically a no-brainer for me since BR has all the movies that I like, except Miracle which is Disney. Why no "Miacle" yet?

Spend the extra on a PS3. It is a good investment.

I have a few more questions. I know online play is free but a friend of mine complained that he could never complete a game because his online opponent always leaves in the final minutes of Madden, etc. Is there a way to avoid this or join leagues that like to play regardless of losing in the final minutes?

Dang you missed out on the walmart secret sale. PS3 80GB, free game plus 15 free blu ray movies. It's what moved me over from buying a HD DVD player on black friday night. I say go for the PS3, but wait for a great sale. I'm sure there will be atleast one more real good sale of the PS3 promoting blu ray.

If you get the right bundle its like the ps3 was free Much better than a plain old HD DVD player and a couple of movies.

Since it's Disney's, just be patient pal...it'll be here before you know it...and it won't be in red package...

actually it's his opponent that does the disconnecting...maybe if your friend knows who he's competing with, your friend could tell beforehand to finish the game win or lose...but I could be wrong, there's maybe more than just opting to leave the game...

Are there more serious online leagues to join for PS3?

Sit closer. At that distance with that screen, you can't really see the fine details HD video can give. The maximum distance where details can be discerned for that screen size is 6 feet.

Secondly, you're getting 1080i on both the HD-A2 and the PS3. Until you upgrade your TV, you can't see 1080p.

So basically since I don't have a 1080p set, I shouldn't waste my time on a PS3 for BR yet?

A lot of folks here have 1080i but are using PS3 as their primary BR player and it still give them way over satisfaction than what DVD can offer...all he's saying is you'll never get the full potential of PS3 untill you upgraded to a 1080p display...PS3 can handle both 1080i and 1080p...

I own 2 non-1080p HD sets and am about to own a 2nd PS3....the PQ is still outstanding regardless...

the one thing I tell people is...if you don't plan on dipping into HD media, then don't spend your money on 1080p because HD broadcasts are all in 720p/1080i...

but once you get a HDTV in any form...you're good to go with a BD player...and a PS3 is ideal as it has all sorts of possibilities..

Is there a huge difference from 1080p and 720p with distances of 8-9 feet?

Just get a PS3 - it will max out your TV's capabilities when you play blu-rays and is one of the best at upconverting DVDs.

Here is a guide to viewing distances.
