Default Worst Remake Ever?

News that David Fincher plans to 'Remake' Hitchcock's 'Strangers on a Train' (Why David? Why) has prompted the question: In your view what's the worst remake Ever?

To get the ball rolling: maybe 'Day the Earth Stood Still' with Keanu?

Psycho
A Nightmare on Elm Street
I know I will get it for this but I did not like the remake of Cape Fear.
To me they took everything that made the orignal great and tossed it out the window. Which is sad because I like Martin Scorsese and am a fan of most of the cast.

How about some of the questionable Hollywood remakes of European films? Or Sluizer's own remake for the English speaking world of 'The Vanishing'?

Psycho has got to be the most worthless film ever made. Gus Van Sant wondered if it was possible to capture the essence of a Hitchcock film by doing a soulless shot-for-shot copy. Any sane person would think about this for three seconds before concluding "no." The fact that he actually made the thing to find out is astounding.

Default Not for the first time has Hitch been un-Hitched!!

Here's my choice for "worst remake"-- PSYCHO by Gus van Sant.
a tepidly-colored Second-Rate-Second-Treatment of Hitch's PSYCHO!! Even the use of the original script and a hard-working competent cast couldn't make this anything but an excercise in futility.
The result--- a monumental bore that proves that no matter HOW excellent the material, the "right touch" is needed.

It's sad that even A-list directors like Fincher can't come up with anything really ORIGINAL these days.

Oh, here's one I wish I'd forgotten: 'Charade' with Cary Grant was remade with Mark Wahlberg as 'The Truth about Charlie.'

Both of the films above are just an utter disgrace...

Exactly: One man's Homage is another man's Fromage.

What makes me laugh, is that at least, the other remakes people mention, were at least made in some semblance of "good faith": Either the director legitimately wanted to make the movie and failed, or they were after a quick buck, or something. van Sant, however, made the remake, in his own words, "So no one else would have to." Not only is that the strangest reason ever for making a film, it's also depressing.

2002's Rollerball is pretty awful. And if I think it's awful, it's awful.

Here are the remakes featured in the Bottom 30:

Not sure if it counts, but #28 on my worst of all time list

[Show spoiler]

#24 on my worst of all time list

[Show spoiler]

#17 on my worst of all tine list

[Show spoiler]

Not sure if this counts, but #15 on my worst of all time list

[Show spoiler]

Not sure if this counts, but #10 on my worst of all time list

[Show spoiler]

Not sure if this counts, but #8 on my worst of all time list

[Show spoiler]

Near misses:

-Sandler did not appear in any capacity on this "worst of" list, so good for him! The Longest Yard and Mr. Deeds both narrowly avoid this list

-the Thing '11 doesn't quite crack the bottom 30

-Man of Steel somehow avoids this list, despite being the worst superhero film ever made

-Burton somehow only made one apperances on this list; Planet of the Apes and Charlie and the Chocolat Factory are preilously close

-say what you will for the unncessary Platinum Dunes remakes - at least for the most part, they try, and maintain their original's R ratings. So I do give them credit in general for that. And ANOES '10 is a legitimately good film, of all the horror remakes, I don't know why that gets so much flack. On the other hand, PG-13 horror remakes like Prom Night and The Fog, are much, much worse than anything Dunes put out. They nearly made the list.

-The Ring, The Grudge, One Missed Call, &c - the irritating trend of slasher remakes was preceded by an even more irritating trend of jhorror remakes. One Missed Call probably being the worst, but it's saving grace was that it effectively killed the trend. Some argue that movies like The Ring and The Grudge are actually good. I disagree, they are horrific, albeit not quite bad enough to make the above list.

-Total Recall - yes, this has its apologists. I AM NOT AMONG THEM. F*** THIS PIECE OF SHIT.

Wouldn't really call The Great Gatsby a remake. More of another adaptation of the book.
