I just watched an Indonesian English-subtitled video of Doraemon Stand By Me and it was surprisingly the best Japanese animated film NOT from Ghibli that i've seen in years. Great Back to the Future/Christmas Carol type storyline and beautiful cgi animation! Does anyone recommend any other Doraemon movies/tv series and which of those recommended ones have English subs/dubs on their videos?

None of the Japanese discs have English subtitles.
I grew up with the 1979-2004 TV series, and they are great, although sometimes the "Future Tech" is a bit dated now. Most adults i know that grew up with that series cannot watch the 2005-now TV series, in which the voice actors changed, and the animation style completely changed. I personally don't mind the change, it is still fun. As for the movies, "Stand By Me" is very different from the other movies, in terms of style and story. I don't have any particular favorites, but I do remember going to see "Animal Planet" as a kid in the theater and being really annoyed how whiny Nobita was for 90 minutes or however long the movie was... But still enjoyable. |

Im not sure if anyone cares but the Hong Kong bluray of Doraemon: Stand By Me surprisingly came with English subtitles! I picked it up yesterday. This is the FIRST Doraemon video that actually got English anything! Finally. It was strange because when Doraemon Stand By Me played in theaters here in Hong Kong, none of the prints had English subs/dubs. Also, this HK bluray is not for sale at dddhouse and it is not obviously advertised in new section in Yesasia. So I wonder if some sneaky move was involved regarding the English subs on this video.
The HK bluray only has the Cantonese audio track by the way. That's okay and better than no English subs with Japanese track. The Cantonese dubbing is excellent anyway and sad that the famous HK voice actor who did Doraemon's voice for 30+ years just died recently, so I think his final work was for this film. |
