Default Canadian Dollar equal to US Dollar

It was announced this morning that the Canadian dollar was equal to 1.0013 US dollars! Now my fellow Canadians, that means we can import stuff from the US for cheap! =D

No, you are looking at the wrong rate. 1 USD = 0.9980 CAD. It is close to par. Things may change later in the day.

Ok well at one point it was slightly above... anyways, on the radio they just had one of the guys (captian scotty, if you listen to the fox in vancouver) exchange a loonie for an american dollar. He had to pay 1 loonie and 3 cents to get it.

There are consequences to all of this.

It may not work well for Canada in the long run IMO.

There are consequences for sure. Less tourism here, lumber profits go down a bit, etc. But for short term it helps the little man that wants to import from the US.

The US dollar will go back up in value.

A weaker dollar means that the US is more competitive in the global market.

People will buy same quality good in the US for cheaper and that will strengthen the US economy and up the value of the US dollar. Then the US will start to buy cheaper foreign products and our dollar will fall again.

It’s a back and forth effect.

Not without kicking your own. The US depends on Canada for much of it's oil, water, lumber electrical power and import/exports. Canada is the US's largest trading partner.

You also have not seen a drunk Canadian. A drunk Canadian can really kick butt.

I hope all of you Canadians use those Canadian dollars to buy cheaper American blu-rays and help inflate the Nielson numbers.

Ooop USD is back up to 1.0011

Looks like it was hitting resistance at 1.0057.

The trend is still there. We will probably see some sort of drop within the next couple of hours.

I've been doing that. Blu Ray prices here at Futureshop and Best Buy are such a rip off.

Default Canadian Dollar slipping

Today: $98.05 CAD to the US $100.

How many people are going to the US to buy Blu-ray players, screens, etc.?

There is still a tremendous savings on high-end products:

True, but the point is that sticker prices on many things are still high in Canada. If you are Canadian, going to America and paying in USD still pays off. I know several people who are going to America to buy cars. People should do the same for BD players and screens.
