Default What to show in order to impress a potential newbie...

OK - I am finally having a couple of very good friends over tonight who are teetering on the border of High Def. I want to really drive home the fact that blu-ray is the best, so that they can fill their house with it (as I have) - thereby doing my part to help us win this "war". I have just hit the 100 BD mark - a great 1080p 61" Samsung, great Bose 901 speakers, etc - so the set up is nice.

What do I show to put them over the edge? I know what I like - but what do you all think is the most impressive. If I don't have it in my current library, I may have to go out and get it.

I will use the most popular choice - as long as it is NOT the entire PLANET EARTH (as beautiful as it is!)

Note: One of them is a die-hard Led Zeppelin fan - so the release of LED ZEPPELIN: SONG REMAINS THE SAME will be a big selling point - if only it was already available.

Thanks everyone - and welcome me to the 100 club!!!

I'd go with most of Disney/Pixar but don't forget to include Fox... All these companies are really trying to max out Blu-ray and show what it can do ! Stay away from most of WB as they use the same setup as HD DVD...

What will your friends be in the mood for? Pirates: DMC is awesome and so is FF 2, Casino Royale, Ratatouille, or Apocalypto. There are many others, but then I wouldn't be helping.

I'd have to say either Cars or Ratatouille, if anything because they're digital to digital transfers. Those are truly stunning (and exclusive to blu). For a regular movie I'd have to say Apocalypto. I think it would be a mistake to not sample a bit of Planet Earth and, say, 2001. You could say that sure, you can get Planet Earth and 2001 on both HD and blu, but you can get THESE only a blu as well.

Disney Animation.
The most popping 3D I have seen so far is on a Disney Blu-ray Disc.

Example, click image:

The Wild.

POTC movies are quite good too!

Though I haven't seen Apocalypto, it may be a big turn off if they aren't big Mel Gibson fans. It seems 50/50 these days. FF2 was sweet. Ratatoille is great but if these are adults and there aren't kids around, they might not be in the mood. The Pirates movies are a lot of fun and gorgeous on bd. I would lean towards those movies. Die Hard 4 is supposed to look really good and the sound is supposed to be incredible, which I think is one of BD's best selling points. You could pick up the quadrilogy and let them have a pick.

don't know how I left out Pirates movies and the average movie fan looks at animated movies like..."it's animation...of course the PQ is outstanding"

Thanks everyone - I agree that at least 15 minutes from one of the Planet Earth segements would be a great way to start. I do have most of the movies everyone suggested. Ratatouille really strikes a chord with me - as does Pirates 2. I think between the those three - we will impress.

Will be sure to post back and let you all know what happens. Hoping for a grand slam - that they will go out tomorrow and spend all their hard-earned cash!

show the slow-motion shark scene or the one where the umm...I think it was a cheetah or a cougar that chased down a deer on the steep mountain cliff and dragged it back to it's lair...

Most Def use Pirates 2 and Ratatouille. Apocolypto is beautiful but some people don't like subtitles and you don't want that taking away from the experience. Also Spiderman 3 is reference so I would recommend that one as well. Good luck tonight, and bring forth many more to our cause!!!!
